I thought the only difference is the colour of the writable surface.

Burning surface is identicle.

I have been using the blue Optodisc for quite some time and haven't had a single coaster with them. I recently bought the gold and they are terrible. Out of the 50 discs I've only been able to burn about 11. I'm not sure if there is a difference, but I'm sticking with the blue.

I like using the blue optodisc myself. They are very reliable from my experience. I usually purchase them from http://www.precisioncddvd.com. They're priced at $86.95 for a hundred pack. One of the cheapest price I've seen so far.

I'm with homer. I thought that the discs were the same, only the coating was different. I've only used the blue branded ones. Haven't had any problems.

I've heard different things, some say the gold are better, others say the gold tops are garbage. Is there a difference?

mrayfu, as far as price goes, most of the online stores are about the same. What's most important to me is reliability and service when there is a problem. I've read too many posts from other people about bad experiences with online vendors of media. From personal experience, precisioncddvd.com (http://www.precisioncddvd.com) is the best when it comes to speed and service. Very helpful people. I just wish they had a larger selection!
