Matrix Infinity will work with a V1, and it's one of the best chips there is

How difficult would it be to do the installation myself? I don't see any place that will do an install for a version 1 PS2.

If you have a good soldering iron and is confident with your soldering skills, it's not too hard. Otherwise ask around, it'll be hard to find someone who does installation for a V1, but there should be some.

im not a professional. i can mod ps2 from v4 onwards, but v1-3 is impossible for me.

there are 2 motherboards linked together by a few points with alot of solder, and i cant take them apart. come to think of it, maybe a bigger soldering iron tip can do the job.

my suggestion is to bring it to a professional modder.

matrix infinity is good.

get a newer ps2 on ebay or somthing if you are straped for cash , becuse you are just going to go through a bunch of trouble with a v1 just to find out that the laser in that thing will not read backups .

By not reading backups, do you mean ALL backups? or just game backups? I play movie backups all the time on it without problems.

I guess I'll just have to do without. Even the people at Team Modders said I'd have to buy another PS2. I can't afford another PS2 + modchip + installation. Sigh...

yeah, it is a shame but not many people want to mess with a V1
every place i know will do V4-V15 only. Must be a real pain with the V1-V3 PS2
The very best you are going to do is a used premodded system for about $220.

a PS2 will play movie back ups with no mods. Games are different as they are pressed discs and there is an area that a DVD burner can not copy. That is why Swap Magic or a modchip is needed to play them.

Hmm... How much do used fat PS2's usually go for on eBay? I only see like 1 on the completed section. If I could get around $80 off eBay, then it be no problem.

I have done my V2 with Matrix Infinity , since they told me it was impossible to do. Let me tell you they are hard to do and take lots of time and patience, that's why nobody wants to do them. After that I mod my friends Ps2 v1,v2 and v3 with M. Infinity, Modbo and Duo 3 , no prob so far. If your machine is reading backup dvd without problems ,then your laser is Ok , go ahead and install a chip. Why to get a used machine from Ebay that you don't know and later find out that the laser is already to weak to play backups games, just my opinion.
