buying a phone in the uk for use in south africa

I want to buy a phone for some family who are visitng the uk at the moment and would like to buy them a mobile phone as a leaving gift. I am just wondering what factors do i need to ocnsider when making a purchase for them. E.g. tri-band dual-band etc. The plan is for me to buy the handset over here in the uk just an average colour phone lyk a nokia 1600 for around £40 and then they will buy a starter pack (sim card etc) in south africa for the fone. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Make sure the frequencies in the phone support the simcard frequency in the country they are going to buy the phone.

well i checked that site and the networks seem to only use 900 and 1800 so that sounds to me like i only need a dual band fone.

Soomebody else told me this

"In South Africa there are:
1)Cell C (Pty) Ltd - GSM 1800;
2)MTN - Mobile Telephone Networks (Pty) Ltd. (MTN - Mobile Telephone Network Ltd.) - GSM 900;
3)MTN - Mobile Telephone Networks (Pty) Ltd. - GSM 1800;
4) Vodacom Group Pty Ltd. - GSM 900.

Therefore, you can easelly buy a simple 2 band (GSM 900-1800) phone. "

This sounds right to me but i would appreciate another opinion before i go oout for one
