Definitely not in the same situation for me.

I have AnyDVD and Shrink and these worked for me. However, I ripped the disc with VOBB (to blank everything I don't want), so that probably did the trick.

AnyDVD will most certainly handle almost everything. But in the rare event that an error message appears with Shrink, I use DVDFab to rip.

I'm shrinking The Hills Have Eyes as we speak. 20% analyzed, but I still have time to hit a CRC error. If I get it too, I'm going to run it through vob blanker. I'm NOT running any dvd right now as I'm being cheap and I'm waiting for a discount coupon.

BTW, possible crc errors aside, I'm doing widescreen backup, movie only at 93% compression.

if you have AnyDVD, rip it to your hard drive first with AnyDVD ripper, then use shrink to compress it and IMGBurn to burn it.
if you don't have AnyDVD, use fabdecrypter, it should work out fine.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

@arniebear - thank you! :)

Ok, so the Hills dvd shrank with no problem AND no AnyDVD. I happened to rip it to my hard drive first using fab DVD Decrypter because I wanted to watch it during the encoding process. From everything I understand, opening the image on my hard drive shouldn't be any different from opening it from DVD. I didn't run VOB blanker or anything special... Just DVD Shrink.

For the most part, you don't have to run VOBB when you have AnyDVD and/or DVDFab. The only reason I rip with VOBB then compress with Shrink and burn with Decryptor (while AnyDVD is running, of course) is because I want to blank all the crap I don't want while keeping all my menus and features.

With that said, my backup process went fine and I haven't heard many people complaining about it so I'm assuming bare bones stuff will work with this.

Glad it's worked for many!

backed up hills have eyes at 84%, I kept everything but the music video and the 50 min documentary. I like delted scenes and alternate endings and stuff. anybody know if 84% is good? Also when I use VOB blanker after its done is it necessary to use shrink to code or can i just bunr it like that eliminating a step?

1.Shrink to rip if higher than 60% before removing anything otherwise i use dvdfab
2. VOB blanker get rid of unwanted stuff
3. shirnk to put image on hard drive
4. shirnk to burn image

are these all necessary?

It is true that "The Hills Have Eyes" does carried some of the latest protections, however, as usual, it's just another piece of cake. Again, like usual, DVDFAB Decrypter (FREE) to rip (12 minutes), VobBlanker (5 minutes) to process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and "blank out" unwanted junks (FBI Warnings, rating logos, previews/trailers) and the rest is history.

Best of lucks to all and happy burning.

I have tried and tried to backup this movie and have about 12 coasters so far. I just hate to run into a movie I cannot backup because it may happen again later and them I won't know how to get around it. Help please!
I'm running Win XP, Nero 6.6.1.4 (this version broke my Shrink), AnyDVD, DVDFab Express, VOBBlanker.
I have tried all possible combinations of the above and nothing will make a readable copy, Even when Recode completes sucessfully none of my DVD players will read it and neither will my PC. The only things I haven't tried are Shrink (when I updated Nero it wouldn't work anymore, if anyone can help me with a link to Nero 6.6.0.18 I would be very grateful!) and burning w/a DVD+R DL. If you have had success with a DL please tell me exactly what programs you used. I did download Alkohol DVD 6 but and it saiid to use a DL but when I tested it on another disk it wouldn't burn. Everything else burns fine with the new Nero update as it did with the old one even though I hate it because I can't use Shrink. Just this one DVD refuses to burn.

Shrink will work with Nero 6.6.1.4. You just have to manually open the files in Nero to burn them. The link to burn automatically with Nero was broken. Go back to Version 6.6.0.18. I don't have all the links to that version where I'm at. Someone will come along that does.
