cant get laptop to regenise dvd witer

k i got this old laptop. its a windows 98. about 20 gig hard drive.
my bro deleted some of the microsoft office files that were on this laptop now i need to use this laptop because i dont have another one. this problem is about 3 years old. this happened 3 years ago but now i need this laptop again. so fisrtly to reinstall xp or 2000 i got a brand new dvd writer.

its a hp dvd wirter dvd420e

now this thing is not reginized by my laptop but is able to work on my main computer. i tried to look for a driver on the hp site but i was not able to find it. so i really need this writer to work so than i can reinstall windows and than be able to use the drive and get mircrosoft beck.

i need help to get this to work

the drive is for xp & win2k pro not win98 or me. that is why can't get it to work on win98.

so if i want this to work on my laptop do i have to buy a new dvd writer and if i do will i need to use a driver and get the driver on to win98?
