My computer just kicked me in my robot balls...

HISTORY:

After a 4 month tour in Balad Iraq I came home to a broken TV, a defaced computer monitor, my phone didnt work properly, my luggage was lost, the DVD burner in the computer went out less than a week ago and now I'm trying to finish backing up my new movies.

Well, I was fresh out of DVD's so I ran over to wal mart, picked up 2 packs of 15 and started loading them to my C: drive. I got everything loaded, popped in the same brand DVD+R disk and tried to copy it to the DVD but the computer/disk drive isn't having any of it...

I've tried restarting, I've tried unplugging, making sure the drive was working properly (will play movies fine), I checked to see if it was able to burn on that drive, I'm using the same DVD Shrink 3.2 program to save it on the desktop and SONIC RECORD NOW to get them on the DVD itself. This is the same process I was going thru before I left in January this year. I cant seem to finish any of the DVD's. I did knock one out the other night but when I put the disk into the dvd player it didnt register (error! error!)

STEP 1 - DVD Shrink to save on computer
STEP 2 - Sonic Record Now to save on the DVD

It works great. I didnt need anything before, has something changed? it's the same program, same computer, different DVD burner (3 days old), I cant figure it out. Any help on this matter would be great!!

FYI, it saves normal on the desktop I think but I keep getting the following message when I try getting it onto the DVD...

Recording error
Recording errors often occur when the media contains dirt, fingerprints, or scratches.
If you are getting recording errors:
? Try using a new disc.
? Try using a different manufacturer's disc.
? Ensure the disc is clean before recording:
o Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
o Wipe the disc from the center to the edge.
o Dry the disc completely.

The discs are clean and right out of the box. I opened both tubes and tried several (6) memorex DVDs from each but no go from either holder.

QUESTIONS:

Is my new DVD burner bad?
Am I missing a patch/program something?
should I try something else?
WTH do I do to fix this issue?

slightly miffed,

What types of blank DVD are you using? What movies are you trying to back up? DVD Shrink is no longer up dated so it can not handle most of the newer encryptions. To have better success ripping the DVD to your HDD, you should use DVD Fab Decrypter (free program) or AnyDVD (costs $39). If you use DVD Decrypter, I would also suggest using VOB Blanker. The steps I use to back-up all movies (newer ones), rip with DVD Fab Decrypter to HDD, run files through VOB Blanker, then open new VOB files with DVD Shrink and then burn.

its probably your media, memorex is not good media, try Verbatim or sony but also do what alpsig said for newer movies, and depending on your proccessor and ram it usually only takes 15 min for DVDfab decrypter and only 5 min for VOB blanker

i would try the media first though

I was wrong...the media is maxell. Not sure if thats any better but I'll swing over to the store and pick up some SONY and something else thats +R so I can rule out possibilities. the OVB blanker thing looks a little complicated for me. I'll give it a shot after testing other media. Thanks...

vdrsmydad,
Below is a guide that uses all freeware. Since you already know alot about Shrink this should be real easy for you. The guide is in great detail but that is for the beginners so excuse the length. Once the programs are set up it is easy to do a movie. You might have to insert VobBlanker in the freeware cycle if you encounter structural problems w/ the DVD's.

You could also just buy AnyDVD and use the ripping feature there to rip the DVD to HD as the program utilizes FixVTS to correct the structure problems

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup%20with%20DVDFABDecrypter,S...

The Maxell's you had are usually OK. The reason I suggested using a different DVD burning program ( DVDDecrypter ) is that would verify if something is wrong w/ the burner. If you can not burn the DVD following the guide and you can also not use Sonic then the burner has to be a problem. Try cleaning the lens to see if that helps

@vdrsmydad
Or you can just do your normal thing..,
STEP 1 - DVD Shrink to save on computer with anydvd running in the background
and...
STEP 2 - Sonic Record Now to save on the DVD

Hello,
I just encountered a problem with DVD Shrink as well when trying to back up 8-Below and the Legend of Narnia.

When I put either of the Disc's in then open up shrink it starts off ok then when I try to un select the different languages it freezes and I can't do anything. I get a Page Not Responding at the top of Shrink.

What can I do to back up these movies, I use DVD Shrink, DVD43, I also have Dvd Decryptor and Imgburn. Im not familiar with VOB Blanker or Any Dvd.

I did try using Dvd Decryptor, Im not sure if I did it right or not, but the files on my Hard Drive wouldn't work when I tried to open them with Shrink and while using Dvd Decryptor while ripping I saw things like "Inserting Dummy Sectors" etc.

Can anyone help me with this please?
Thanks

1Tizz,
Locoeng gave you the correct decrypter if you want a free one. DVDDecrypter will not be updated, DVD43 is only updated along time after the movie is out and can not handle structural problems. So use DVDFAB Decrypter then use Shrink. If you get an error in Shrink then use VobBlanker to correct the structural problems and then use Shrink. A guide is below:

http://www.k-probe.com/backup-newly-release-DVD-DVDFAB-Decrypter-...

You can also use the ripping function in AnyDVD ( way better than DVD43) and rip it to HD then use Shrink to compress.

rbrock,
If you burner can booktype the DVD(+) then that would make them more compatible. What is the name brand and model # of your burner and I'll check to see if you can booktype. I have 2 Sony DVD Players and 1 Cyberhome and the Verbatims play fine in all 3

Hi there,

Here's an Update....

I was told to download the PgcEdit along with the other things that come with the download and using Dvd Decryptor it took care of all the issues I was having and I was finally able to do a clean Burn of Eight Below using Imgburn.

I was confused using the PgcEdit but once I started it basically walks you through what its going to do so that made it easier but Im sure I will come across something I don't understand later.

Anyway, thanks again for all the Help and Input Im sure I'll have more ???'s at a later time.

Xw2X,
Since your player is having a hard time reading the Maxell (RW's) but not the Imation (+)R's then do not use an RW. Just use a (+)R DVD. Some Player's can not read some blank media and evidentially your Player can not read the Maxell RW's
