Is burning at 1X always the best option if time is NOT of the essence? I've read that you should try 1X then 4X. I would think if 1X doesn't work then 4X won't work. I tried to search for topics on this but there doesn't seem to be much discussed. Can anyone explain this further?

I normally go with half of what the discs are rated at.

Example 16x discs - burn at 8X
8x - burn at 4x

That is a good rule of thumb.

If I have 8X DVD-R and burn at 1X...is that better than burning at 4X?

Thanks, I'll take the advice. Inquiring minds need to know...why is it that 4X would work better than 1X. My DVD writer is a Sony. Not sure what model.

I know this is probably way off topic, but I wanted some feedback:

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you can help me out here. I'm thinking about purchasing a duplicator. I saw one and this are the specs:

1. It's a 2 target(meaning two burning drives in addition to one reading drive)
2. The two burning drives are NEC3550A drives
3. The reading drive is an Asus DVD E616A 16x DVD ROM
4. It as an Acard DVD Copy Plus Duplicator Controller with 8MB SDRAM Buffer
5. Selectable burning speeds
6. DVD format cross-over
7. 80gb hard drive
8. 3 yrs labor and 1yr parts manufacturer warranty.

It costs $320 shipping included. Does this sound like a good deal to any of you, or should I look for something else? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

The discs you are using are designed for 8x maximum speed, it is always wise to half the speed so you get less errors. dvd writers have come a long way from what they use to be and are designed to work better at higher speeds.
