Software tips
1.drivers
(XP is evil with drivers and SP2 even more so,so try reinstalling them)
2.Scandisk (theres a chance Scandisk can fix it,a system file ore driver might ahve gone wonky)
3.GOt anythign like ZOne armas that likes to suspend programs and drivers untill you give them the ok? my comp was lockign up and frezzeing when it wnet into basic suspend mode alla screeensaver zone alrms with fudgeing with the spool driver.
4.do a virus scan in safe mode after a scandisk if ou can stay in XP long enough
3Dmark 03 is a good benchmark program that will crash the comp if its not running good ot run slowly if things are messed up its a good program to gauge your PCs power as well.
dont get cocky and get 05 or crap,03 is simple enough to run basic to advance 3d game demos if you will and it can show how stable your comp is if you get bad scores slow downs crashing and rebooting,also if you unlock it you can run the test 90 tiems or at elast enough to run it ver night and give it a good burn in test.
AVG is a free Anti virus program if you need something thats higher than normal grade
Spybot is a must
Ewido is a tril spyware program but it picks up alot of crap
WHen all else fails reinstall/update just stick youer CD in and take it thru a updated install this will bring XP to a simi perfect state at elast where good data is consered and mgiht fix broken driver issues,plus you can see if the system goes nuts when you update the drivers if it hates a driver get a newr driver or try a older version of the driver if there are no newer
Hardware tips
1.set mobo to defaults try optimail frist then safe
2.try runign your comp at a lower speed or lowering the speed on your ramm.
3.Mem test either the X86 version or MS's version get it make the CD or disk and give it 2-8 hours to test your RAMM
4.you can move your ramm to diffrent slots this might help it might not.
5.go into the bis and turn off all unused motherboard prephilers (USB,Audio,Video,Parrel port,serail,ecte,ct) sometiems a stray IRQ confilt can cause havoc on XP
6.nearing the end of hardware tricks pull out all PCI cards and try them one at a time,SB cards hate being last so try and put them in the slot AFTER the slot near the vid card and go down by one if craseing still happens.
ALso a bad PCI card and make the system go nuts so this is a good way to test them all.
this is what I do when I cant get XP to behave after refreshing it with a mini reinstall...if that fails that leaves a full reisnal and for that you need a 2nd HD or CD/DVD writer to back up your email,bookmarks game saves and other stuff befor diveing inot the joy of format and install...
