I saw on some forums that people have successfully used pc dvd rom drives in their ps2 after their laser gave up.
is it possible? which dvd-rom drives are compatible with ps2? are there any dvd-rom drives from which one can use the laser for ps2 because ps2 laser replacement is very costly here at my place, while dvd-rom prices are half of it.
Quote:How can you use a USB dvd rom drive with ps2, the transfer rates will be very slow and i dont think so its possible
Actually it won't be much slower than the PS2 DVD because the DVD reader in the PS2 is quite slow, so despite fact that the USB ports are 1.1 I doubt you'll see a huge reduce in speed
No one has successfully used a USB DVD drive on a PS2 as far as I know, that doesn't mean it's not doable though.
Where did you see hear that information from? It'll be useful to know where the source is. Also It's not so much the structure of the laser, but rather how the laser is controlled that's important. As long as you can get the I/Os of the laser right, it should be doable, but again, need info. on where you read those things from
Nope network adaptor is what you need, if you have a slim PS2 then you'll need something like HD Connect or HD Combo. I guess for the older PS2 you COULD solder an IDE cable (with some modification) to the PS2 motherboard - just like what they do in HD Combo - but that won't be cheaper than getting a network adaptor, and network adaptor's 100 times easier
