I read this article about DVDS,i always buy TDK,they used to say it would last a lifetime and then changed it to limited lifetime. This article says they will not last 2 years, all brands,5 years the most. I just transferred a lot of home made video and music video clips all to DVD + - R,so i could get rid of Video tapes and this rubbish comes out,i hope it aint true.I hope this is not the case also for all the recorded DVD bought from shops.

They have a link to a company that sells gold DVD R,they say will last 100 years, they probably will in a few years say it lasts a limited time.

This is the link to that news

This is the link to the company saying it will last 100 year.

I have lots of 10+ year old burned CDs that are fine, for whatever value that has.

Problem is a lot of media will burn badly but not give you an indication of a failure. Plus, the "verification" features of software like EZ-CD Creator/Roxio and Nero often don't detect errors that DOS' File Compared (FC.EXE /b) does.

The solution, though, is to keep two copies of the same thing (or copious PAR2 volumes) and then sample or check your burned media every once in awhile. Ideally, keep your "backup set" on good media like Taiyo-Yuden, stored in a clean, dark, cool place, stored in jewel cases. If a disc from your "normal-use" set starts showing problems, make a backup or two from the "backup set", and use the fresh copy as a replacement for your backup disc. The backup disc becomes your "normal-use" copy of that particular disc now. It's like rotating stock.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

The Gerecke claim is only true for very poor quality discs or mishandled discs. He is trying to sell tape. CD-Rs ought to last well over 50 years if they are well made to begin with and kept out of direct sunlight and wild temperature/humidity fluctuations. Gold is a little better as a reflector for CD-R. As for DVDs, very stable DVDs will have 95% still readable in 40 years according to the best estimates of archival life. Gold is a problem since it reflects less than silver alloy, and that could cause a problem with some players.

Claims of "300" years and "100" years just means that a few discs from a batch might make that figure. The trick is to check the confidence rate expressed as a percentage of discs in a batch that will achieve those figures. Few of the wild claims will mention that number.
