Japan: Mitsubishi's 30GB dual-layer HD DVD-R media in July

ghetocowboy used our news submit to tell us about this story he spotted over at Engadget: "The media will be launched 2 weeks after Toshiba dual layer HD-DVD recorder, the RD-A1. I thought the HD DVD media are going to be cheap and should edge out Blu-ray media in term of costs, but at $39, I would rather buy a movie on HD-DVD instead, because it is cheaper. Prices like this will deter piracy."
Fortunately, Mitsubishi also announced the first dual-layer HD DVD-R discs this morn" set to drop in Japan at the "end of July" for an estimated ¥4,500 (or about $39)

No doubt HD-DVD and Blu-ray blank media will enventually drop in price to a point where it's actually worth it to make backups. Do you remember how much blank DVD's were when they first came out? I came around that technology a bit later than most so I can't recall. One thing for sure is I'm not buying anything Blu-ray or HD-DVD until it's become more clear who's winning that format war.

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)
