I archive my digital pics and mp3 to CD-Rs right now but was thinking of using DVD+Rs for now on. Are DVD+Rs as durable and reliable as CD-Rs? The reason I am asking is that I noticed that when I cut up a no longer wanted DVD+R, it tends to crack all over and crumble into several pieces. But when I cut up a CD-R, it doesn't do what I mentioned above. The CD-R simply stays intact except for where I place my cuts.

Well I have never cut up a disk, but I do use DVD +/-R's to archive my data and MP3 files and have had not problem with them. You can get more on the DVD's so you use less disks. It would take me 25 CD's for music vs. a quarter of that amount in DVD's. I find them just as reliable as CD's.

Well having experience with both and keep in mind this is just my opinion ! If you care for both equally well Other than capacity they should be about what and what Durability wise ! although I've found DVD media a little less tolerant of of scratches than Cdr But that can be simply because your Cramming 7 times the amount of data /music /video or whatever onto the same size surface as a cdR! What I have noticed is that The DVD RW Media atleast the Inexpensive ones Scratch very easily and become unusable do to errors and such after multiple recording and erase cycles ! But In your situation which would be akin to that of a Library or archivist I think you'll be just fine as long as you keep taking good care of your media . Don't leave them in direct sunlight for long periods of time and return them to their Cd/DVD case /Binder or Jewel Box when not in use ! ect... Good luck and Keep thinking those good thoughts LOL! Ciao!

Good quality CD-Rs are more reliable than DVD+Rs for two reasons: 1) more stable dye is typically used (phthalocyanine), and 2) the structure of the solid-piece disc is sturdier than the two-piece DVD sandwich. The smaller tracks and pits on DVDs are also more prone to illegibility than the larger pits and tracks on CD-Rs.

On the other hand, CD-Rs upper surface is far more fragile than that of DVDs. The CD-R data area is protected only by a thin layer of lacquer over the silver alloy reflector that sits on the dye. The DVD data layer is sandwiched between two thin pieces of polycarbonate that protect it.

Good quality CD-Rs should last over 100 years with proper handling at a confidence rate of 95%. Good quality DVD+R discs should last about 40 years with the same 95% confidence rate.

I'll drink to that. Just had a burned CD-R crap in my car player today. When it spit it out the bottom burned layer was fine, but the top showed a wear mark across. It was a shiny topped Yamaha disk that came with a burner, I'm just happy I still got the MP3 DJ mix I can reburn.
