I am putting together a system with the sole purpose of creating VCD?s. I want to make the process of creating them as easy as possible for the end user. Here is the system I am building:

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Motherboard
Geforce 6800 256MB 256-bit DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego (I will OC the processor and ram.)
2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel
Two Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s HD?s
And two ASUS Black 16X DVD Drives
But most importantly a Canopus MVRD2200V Realtime Encoding card.

I don?t need to do any editing just a straight transfer from Mini DV, VHS, and DVD to VCD.
Any input would be much appreciated!

i think that is more than enough for making VCD's ,as VCDs were being made before any of the parts of theat computer were out. I think if it is just for VCD's then its a little overkill.
but thats just my opinion

I know it?s a killer system. But I made it that way for future endeavors. I guess my question is what software would you use to burn the compressed file? The Canopus card will encode real-time and give me a finished MPEG 1 file but then what? I will have them encoding about 10 house each day and just wanted to make there lives easy.

what you mean burn the vcd's? if so i would use Nero to burn the files. but i have a couple of questions.
why VCD, if youre going to be spending so much on a system why are your buring or encoding to VCD, why not dvd?
also i loked up that Canopus MVRD2200V or whatever and realized it was a very professional MPEG Encoder and Decoder. Just wondering what is the source that you will be capturing from using that thing.

Just VHS, SVHS, DV, DVCAM, DVD, and a Beta SP once in a while. I need the card because it will compress Real-Time and keeps you in control of the bit rate. The application is for Depositions. Lawyers want the Depo on CD that they can just drop in the computer and play it. Very common in the depo world.

So its just Nero huh.. Very cool! That?s what I though but had to confirm with the masters of Afterdawn.

Thanks for the help!

oh, so thats what you are trying to do, probably could do it with less money but it would proabably take more time and xtra encdoing, but i think you could do realtime encoding with that computer to mpeg1. But since lawyers have money to spare i guess it ok :D

well, i know that the hauppuage 150 card will capture in mpeg in real time because it has a onboard mpeg decoder. and its only around 80$ but i will look a little further into this and see if there is a cheaper card that will capture in mpeg1 or convert on the fly.

OK well i took a look at intervideo windvd creator and it can capture to vcd mpeg, as you can see in the image

you can then autohr to a vcd using VCDgear (whih convers the .mpeg into a .bin/.cue image) that is ready to burn.
It is a little bit more of a lengthy operation but shouldnt take more than 5 or so minutes after capturing the video. if this works for you it would probably save you lots of $$$.
