Ok my laser seems to move up and down to read the dvd but offcourse it doesnt read it, does that mean my laser is dead. My laser's pcb which is under the laser has been damaged pretty badly the voltage adjuster also has been damaged? Can i replace the laser pcb avaliable on the net to make my laser work again or my laser is pretty much dead? Right now it cant read any cd's or dvd's

What version is your PS2? Try cleaning the laser lens and adjusting it if it's not doing anything - got nothing to lose: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1

It did read dvd's n cd's but was kinda weary cuz its 4 yrs old so i tried adjusting de voltage knobs n while doin tht the dvd screw just chipped off and from that time it doest read anything, can it be cuz the pcb was damaged that the lens is not workin.

I have tried cleaning and adjusting the white cog already

and my 2nd question is can a 2nd ide dvd-rom be soldered onto the ps2 motherboard like for ps2 slimlines they have IDE hard drives soldered?

it could be anything really... when you say the dvd screw, which one are you referring to?

Hmm... technically it's doable, well, instead of soldering a second one, replace the original laser with an IDE dvd reader, but i'm not sure how the data is transferred in the PS2 dvd player so i can't say how much trouble that will be

its a V3 with that KSB-400 or something laser..the laser goes up and down and there is no damage to the suspending wires, Also i noticed that the laser doesnt emit light when i try to keep my finger over the laser to check there is no light emmited while before when it used to work light was emitted when it tried to read de dvd or cd.

If the laser head is moving then the laser controller might still be working... what happens when the laser is dead is that it'll move up and down trying to read the disk (but it can't), and that sounds like the problem you have?

Problem is all the dvd-rom's i have have lasers similar to the ones in the slimline ps2's the one which curve near the cd motor, i have a lens which is totally straight and it doesnt even have the black covering near the lens, really old one but i havent used it much so it shouldnt have worn out,

by the screw i mean the 2 screws under the dvd laser which adjust the resistance of the laser. i chipped the dvd one off the pcb so the problem mite be that cuz it stopped working after that and not by usage of the lens.

yea the light from the lens is not coming so i think that wat it means by dead. If the laser was working the laser could be seen easily when it moved up and down..

Are there any dvd-roms which have similar laser to the KSB-400 lens?

hmm not sure... the quickest way is just to get a ps2 laser, but i can see you are trying to use a normal dvd to save cost... try a search in google?

Ok i have some news now what i have done is taken out the voltage screw from a useless cd rom and put it where the voltage screw was taken off and when i run it i see a bright flash from my laser and then low dim laser (not visible easily), does this mean my laser is not dead?
here is a pic of the area of the concerned

what do u think @dan168, i replaced de chipped screw with a new one didnt solder it yet but its just taped onto it and it seems to make a difference.

Theres a light thats good. You would have to adjust it to the right voltage. I have not done it before buti think its hard cause there that white circle thing and the black screw to tilt the angle of the laser. You said the PCb is baddly damage and the voltage adjustment is broken. So what is the damage part??? or is it nothing

Its just that voltage screw was chipped off and i soldered it back again and the light did come out of the laser, it was like one flash when i press reset and a very very dim red light trying to read the disc but couldnt read it.
I tried voltage adjustment but now the laser just flashes once and laser goes up and down but there is no dim light anymore and the spindle (thing which rotates the disc) just gives a sort of bump and then stops, i mean rotates like 2-3 cm and stops.

What could be wrong?

Ok i sort of fixed de problem, now light comes properly and disc rotates in short burts twice or thrice and then it rotates at full speed but cant read the disc.

Also i have noticed that the motor which helps the laser to move across doesnt seem to grip the laser, it keeps slipping what can be the problem?

http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserPS2.htm
"V3 stations - CD = 1080 to 1260, DVD = 800 to 1300"
umight have to adjust it higher so it would read thats the orginal setting
"On worn lasers you will find more often than not - settings of around 10 to 20% less than factory setting are required to guarantee reliable booting."
You mean the worm/snake gear motor thing. Its probably the Lever is worn out.then u hav to replace it.
http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/zz-p2-lever
Or maybe if its not too worn u could use a paper of something to make the lever down closer to the gear(tempary)

Ok thanks for the reply,

i think i found my problem, the pots were chipped off(both) now i soldered them back but as my soldering skills were not upto the mark with small components the pots didnt get properly soldered to the base resulting in an incomplete circuit, when they were on the board i checked with the multimeter for resistance and it showed 0, when i desoldered them and checked one showed 1280 and one showed 850.. so i think my soldering was wrong if i can fix that it will work again i guess, the laser gear wasnt worn out, i fixed that problem by adjusting the lever screw of the laser so that it properly seated on the gear now thats not a problem, just my soldering skills

I think i'll call it quits, now that i know the laser isnt dead, i ll order the pcb for the laser online and fix that onto the laser,it seems like a better deal, it'll have already soldered new pots which i can fix easily and it wont be too costly too.
