Hi,

I was reading a few of the anti label posts, and I too am one who has had problems after using labels on DVDs. There were some alternatives to getting away from labels, but I didn't notice if lightscribing was one of them. Has anyone used these, and if so have you noticed a degradation in quality during playback? I would assume they should play just like an unmarked disc, right?

I'm only asking cuz I'm interested in buying a

to avoid the hassles caused by labels, but I know nothing of light scribing really. Any help would be awesome!

You have learned the most important lesson of all " No Paper Labels!" Any labeling solution other than paper is good - Lightscribe , Thermal or Inkjet Printing and The old reliable Sharpie Pen ! Inkjet printable Media Looks more " Proffesional /Cool /Commercial take your pick ! But requires you to buy Inkjet Printable Media ) More expensive ! Then you factor in The ink & Printer !, Thermal Printers And printing works but You end up with a more Idustrial or bussiness like product/look ImHO! Sharpie pen Not Pretty ( depends on your penmamship & artistic Ability ) But Cheap & effective & works with almost any media ! So when it comes to labeling - 'er Your media it all depends on what you want it to look like when finished ! Lightscribe is a great Idea But like INkjet Printable disc require )SPECIAL) ie: Lightscribe media ( More expensive !) I can lightscribe , can't thermal or Inkjet print directly on media yet ! So I mainly stay in the Sharpie pen Group ! But that's me ! Whatever works and whatever you want to use that'as what it's all about FREEDOM OF CHOICE!

Ya that's quite true. I never realized the paper labels could be so damaging. I think I had 2 in 20 that actually worked, and those were difficult. I got a lightscribe burner on the way so I'll probly use that. Thanks for the response!

Be sure to use the Verbatim lightscribe discs! They are aweswome! My first experience with anything other than Taiyo Yuden media in a LONG time and boy was I impressed! There is also an extended contrast utility available for download here:

http://lightscribe.com/support/index.aspx?id=306

It adds time to the label printing process but you will definitely see better quality. Remember, always use the good stuff, and as far as lightscribe discs go that's Verbatim!

Also, thanks for the link!

hi :)
a small thing about labels (can't remember where i got it from)
Quote:
The trouble with paper labels on DVDs is that the paper contracts and expands with humidity and causes the disc to dish ever so slightly. This causes tilt problems that a 650 nanometer laser cannot resolve. The 780 nanometer infrared CD laser has less of a problem, and the solid plastic piece used in CD-Rs is less likely to dish anyway.

@selavast

Don't get your hopes too high on Lightscribe technology. The finished product with the extra contrast is still not acceptable to me. Maybe with color but not present Verbatim Lightscribes. I've got the new LG 2166d lightscribe a good burner, but terrible for lightscribes IMHO.I have done maybe 3 so far and my Sharpie's look better. It also puts an extra 30 mins time on your laser(@8X my benq will use maybe 12 mins to backup the disc.). I haven't switched to printables because I have so many plain TYs to burn yet.

I go along with garmoon. I had to use an enhancement utility to get my Lightscribe covers to show up better.Still not good enough.

My shiny inkjet printables look a heck of a lot better than my lightscribe backups. They are my favorite among: White full hub inkjet printable,regular,and lightscribe media.

Make sure they are Verbatim LS discs! They'll code as MCC-003.

Hey, for those of you that have used lightscribing, can any of you tell me how to give your image color? It's all black and white.

Selavast- Aye There's The catch ! Lightscribe Atleast at present It's a pretty much monotone process That's it's current limitation ! supposedly they are working on a way to do color ! but realistically I would'nt hold my breath to long on that issue . Nec Has a variant or answer to Lightscribe called LabelFlash - It's more colourful If you like the color blue for now anyways here's a link to info on it ! http://news.softpedia.com/news/NEC-Labelflash-DVD-Burners-14180.shtml . If you want multiple color your back to inkjet printables or paper labels Or maybe Silkscreening with the right media ! But I think most would go with the Inkjet printables . Hope this helps somewhat ! Happy Burning!

The image you use determines how dull or sharp the picture comes out. If you're scanning the original disc and then using that as the picture to burn onto the disc, it's not gonna look great. But if you do some work to it and/or you have a high-res picture, the finished product looks great.

I have a bunch that have turned out superb.

I have like 10 spindles of Verb lightscribes so I use them often now.

@thelox714

That's the best new info on doing lightscribes I've read lately. Making it B&W might just get them dark enough and maybe increasing the contrast of the pix too. Good job.

Making the pic black and white is a must. Whenever you come across the picture you want to use, make it black and white first. From there, I use Photoshop to adjust the curves (contrast etc.). Sharpening and adjusting the contrast will significantly help the picture. Like I said earlier, yeah, I definitely have some bad lightscribe burns but there are some that came out absolutely terrific.

I'm at work right now but when I get home, I'll take a couple of pictures of the discs and post them here.

If anyone's interested, PM me to remind me to do this lol. I'll probably forget about this thread by the time I get home.

yes The concept of Lightscribing is good and from the pics I've seen of lightscribed disc done well then it's none to shabby ! I even Bought A Benq DW-1655 awhile back with lightscribe capability! I really did'nt buy it for that feature that was just lagniappe ! I Got it for the Solidburn & Because Most of the benq decks are highly regarded & also to be able to di DVD-R DL media once the price goes down & becomes more available ! I'm still sharpie pen man ! I thought about doing the Lightscribe thang getting some Verbatims & trying it out but My understanding is that with my model burner the lightscribe utility is bundled in with & part of Nero- software that came with disc ! And being I have Roxio already installed I really don't wanna have to uninstall Roxio Everytime I wanna lightscribe & install Nero Then De install Nero ansd reinstall Roxio when I finish lightscribing ! I understand I can remove Roxio entirely & just go Nero ! But having used both I'm happy where I am ( in the minority I know ) And I Know that Roxio & Nero don't play well together Been there done that ! I even downloaded Ssurething CD labeler4se as someone suggested But still can see how it will let me lightscribe - the only thing I can see having to do with lightscribe in that program is the opening image ? Guess I'll Stick with sharpie or Go epson one Day !

I've had EZ Media creator 7 and Nero 6.6 installed on my pc for two years. I dont have inCD installed, but drag to disc is and I use it. There are never any conflicts with either and never do both run together and neither is in the start menu. I like Creator for cds and Nero for dvds. I guess I'm the luckiest one, cause all I ever see is don't do both.

garmoon- Well I guess Some of us are luckier than others in that respect ! I.m not knocking Nero , I've used it before just did'nt feel the need to buy it when I already had Roxio ! my benq came with a copy of Nero With the lightscribe software in it perhaps I'll try it once I get some lightscribe verbatims onsale ! But like DL media & printables they cost more & I'm Cheap ! so I'll Probably stay with the Sharpies fer' now! Thanx for the help though garmoon!

yeah I like my sharpies best too. I was tempted to get an injet epson to do printables but i have too many dvds to use up first. quality tys and verbs. I got the benq 1650 instead of 1655 since I had a LS burner.

garmoon- Yeah I hear you - If I were buying today ! in the market for another burner I would Probably opt for the 1650 instead of the 1655 since other than the lack of lightscribe it's the same drive albeit less expensive to buy ! & like you I've got some quantity of Non- lightscribe disc to go through as well ! I like the idea of LS though But if I ruined a lightscribe dvd through human error I'd be miffed at ruining an expensive disc with regular blanks I'd still be miffed but not as much! I bought the Benq mainly for the great burn quality, Booktyping& solidburn technology the Lightscribe was a bonus! Like the ability to do DVD-R DL disc when they drop in price! The main thing is everybody's learning to STay away from paper labels! and the problems that come with them. Inkjet ,Lightscribe or sharpie as long as it's not paper I say go for it. Good luck & happy burning garmoon!
