I purchased a 50 pack of Verbatim 16x DVD-R and not one is writeable! When trying to burn on them using Nero I get the message of "This disc is not writeable..." Could it be my burner? Which is a Sony Dual Layer 8x burner? I always set the burn speed to 4x or less so...

while possible, i highly doubt the entire pack is defective...chances are your firmware for your burner is NOT UP TO DATE (meaning the newer media ID tables are not on there currently to recognize the newer 16x rated media) :)

what is your model number for your Sony burner?

updating ur firmware MAY be the solution to your problems...

If an entire spindle is not working, that is strong evidence that the problem lies not in the discs but in some other area. (This is true for ALL discs, although when it comes to discs with CMC MID codes it's interesting that many people simply accuse the discs while excusing Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.) If the Sony is a recent version, it ought to be able to write to 16X at 8X or 4X speeds; but if it is an older version, it may have to be updated. Sony retail drives are generally BenQ drives and Sony drives in VAIO computers are generally Lite-on models. (BenQ and Lite-on are now working together with both Sony and NEC; so things have become much murkier in the last two months.)

What drive string (model identifiction) shows up for your computer? Knowing that, members of this forum can identify the most recent firmware updates for you.

Niobis,

If you expect any help from members here you need to help them by telling us your drive model and firmware version like they ask. I agree it is most likely a problem related to firmware. Also use dvd identifier and give us the manufacturer and ID of those verbatim discs. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Niobis,

There is one type of case where an entire spindle of otherwise reputable discs can be bad. That's when a stamper goes bad because of damage to it or transient debris gets caught on the stamper for a short time then gets pulled off. This will cause imperfect moldings; and sometimes if the flaw is in the critical lead-in tracks, the discs won't work at all. Factory sensors are supposed to catch such flaws, but some are so minute that drifting sensor settings can miss them. Factories will catch the discs soon or later in QA rather than QC; but if the debris was temporary, several hundred discs can get through under the wrong conditions. This has happened to every factory at one point or another. That's why clean room conditions and proper air flow is so critical.
