When trying to use ripit4me I encounter the following problem.....when I start it up ok, it goes to decrypter as it should, but then won't let me procede any further as it says medium not present, or basically, that my dvd player isn't present. But I know it is as I can use it to play the movie. Any thoughts?

Hello JT23.

Is there a reason you're using ripit4me?

Medium not present means there's no disk in the drive. Is there a disk in the burner and is it the correct type?

I'm not familiar with this ripit4me program.

If you want a totally free route, the software and procedure is:

Use DVDFab Decrypter to rip (copy) the DVD to your HDD.
Use DVD Shrink as necessary to compress or reauthor the files to fit a DVD.
Use DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to burn the output from DVD Shrink to the DVD.

Sometimes other programs like FixVTS or Vobblanker have to be used to strip "dead cells" and fix DVD navigation, but not often.

Here's a link to a guide by Alcohol for backing up DVDs using these programs:

There are links to the other software in my signature.

If you use AnyDVD then only DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are necessary for backing up disks.

AnyDVD comes up way ahead! It must not work real well cause the top poster is having trouble with it already. First I've heard of it. Must not be very popular around here. AnyDVD and Decrypter work flawlessly together.

Hello JT23.

I just downloadd the program. Ypu can get this error if you don't have the write letter specified in the wizard for your DVD drive. Double check to make sure you have the correct drive letter selected.

Problem solved! The author went to great lengths to give us this wonderful app and is not even asking for anything in return. I have done 5 movies and every one is a nice clean rip. I guess it will just take time for people to find out about this. It rips, cleans and even loads it into DVD Shrink for you with one click.

I just tried ripit4me with Annapolis and it crashed and burned. Even then it seems to take longer than just using AnyDVD in the background with the other programs. I'll try it once again.

It worked the second time but overcoming the heavy structural protection on the disk took forever with the PCL file and Decrypter. FixVTS also took a lot of time. Except for automating the PCL file importation in Decrypter, all the program does is link programs. It might be OK for some but AnyDVD in the background seems superior to me thus far.

I'd go with DVD FAB Decrypter 1st if you're looking for a FREE DVD Ripper.. It has just been updated too

If I'm going with "an all FREE" tools, then it would have to be DVDFAB Decrypter, VobBlanker, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter (ImgBurn).

<<>> DVDFAB Decrypter (FREE), it's very simple and fast.
<<>> VobBlanker (FREE) to edit, blank out "unwanted junks" and "PROCESS" the VIDEO_TS.IFO to correct/fix any left over craps, fake strutural, VTS, PGCs, etc.
<<>> DVD Shrink to transcode
<<>> DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to burn

However, I hardly and or don't use DVD Shrink now-a-days, I'm all about DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.7 and for less compressions needed, I'd go with Nero Recode 2 (Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign best Quality to Main Movie).

Good luck to all and happy burning.

I did both 8Below and Syriana using RipIt4Me and it worked beautifully on both. It takes a little more time to figure it out but once done it is easy and there are no more steps than DVDFab and VobBlanker. It is free which is a plus and I don't think it should be written off the list of tools.

I just did Ultraviolet and I must say that the ifo's are beautiful. It's fun playing with new toys!
Once you have a beautiful backup, all that's left is a beautiful burn(which is another topic).
