Hi all,
I have a strange issue, I am using 3 good media sources (as defined by many many posts here) and yet when I do a Nero speed check the scores I get are low. I am using TDK, Verbatim and Ritek media and when the tool spits out a score I end up with a score in the 40s to 50s.
Mind you, when this media is playing in the DVD player I have no issues at all. No freezing or stuttering at all.
Very strange! Does any one have a clue?

What is the rated speed of your media and what speed are you burning it at? What make and model dvdrw do you have and what is the firmware version?

Ahh i knew I needed more info when i hit "Enter"!
Firstly, all three media is rated 8x or higher.
I use a liteon burner but I can not remember the model number since i am at work and this is on home PC.
I either burn at 4x or 6x but never higher.
I wish I knew how to do a screen caputure and post it here. If I could do that, it would show the model and firmware of the burner and the media code of the disc as well as the PIF errors that I seem to be getting towards the end of the disc.

Let us know the make and model number of the burner. Yours' maybe one of those that doesn't give good scan results. It doesn't mean the disc burned bad, but rather the burner doesn't do scans good.

sure thing dolphin2.
I will make a note to get this info.
BTW, what is the best way of doing a screen capture? I can capture the whole screen using the system + Printscreen key but I just want to capture the active program (Nero) and not the whole screen.

just hold "Alt" key prior to hitting the Print Screen/SysRq key and only the window that is currently "Active" will be captured..then proceed to host it on your hosting site of choice (imageshack, photobucket, etc.) :)

Liteys generally work well with Nero disc quality scans. The exceptions would be slimdrives used in laptops. You may need to reset the eeprom. There is a utility to do so if need be. Post the model # and we'll go from there. Post a screenshot of those scans too. Another scan utility for liteys and their rebadges is kprobe http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93944

thanks gents for all of your help. This is not the first time either that I have asked and recieved fantastic help from you all.
I wonder if the reason for the bad scores is the fact that I have 2 IDE optical drives in the one PC. I have a Liteon DVROM (model ???) that I use for general purpose reading AS well as doing the rip using DVD Shrink. Then I have the burner mounted in the same PC that I use to burn from the VIDEO folder of my hard drive where DVD Shrink has put its files. Which drive should I be using to test the burn?
Also, what speed should I be using for the test?

You know how good TDK is? So good that when I first came across them years ago, it took me only about a week to realize I should sell them.
They are that bad.
If you have a dog, use them as frisbees.

Ok so TDK is not good?
I always thought that it was ok media!
Ok after the TDK scan one last night, I did another burn using a Ritek G05 disc. From memory, I think I had a score of 56 when the Nero check finished!
I just dont know why I am getting such low scores!
Still, I have to say that these movies play fine on both of my settop box players.
Should I be doing the Nero check using my burner or my DVD ROM drive?

the RitekG05s are very good for SOME people, while problematic for others, there has been a lot of talk recently about the decline of Ritek's quality control, moreso on the inkjet printables, but there are a few members that have nothing but SUCCESS using them, i for one am one of those people (i had Ridata RitekG05s 8x DVD-R about 2 years ago and they have served me VERY well) :P
i think the important thing to realize here is that you say all your backups play back just fine on your standalones, that is a "real-world" test of how good your backups are, whether they will last for years to come, that is an entirely different debate, but to give your aching head a little bit of reassurance, SOME burners are not so inclined to give you accurate scans using Nero (my own pioneer dvr-109 is definitely ONE OF THEM, unreliable scans and extremely low scores-a few ZERO (0) frequently...then scanned on my benq or liteon, 97-98 quality score, go figure!) :)
so, take heart, don't rely TOO heavily on these scores you are getting from Nero, give the kprobe a try to see if it's more accurate, if not, there IS a chance that your particular Liteon is just not a very good "scanner," while a VERY good burning drive, can't win em' all~ :) (ie. my pioneer is MY FASTEST drive right now, ripping, burning, solid built, very good quality, etc...but it couldn't scan a disc properly if it's life depended on it...a give and take situation if you will, so don't worry) :)

I give up!!!
I went out and bought a new burner yesterday. From what I can research on the posts here, I bought a BenQ1650 unit.
Can I still use the Nero speed tools to quantify my burns or do i need another utility like Kprobe (which I have not downloaded as yet)?
I hope this one works beeter than getting a score of "zero" from a Ritek G05 media.
BTW- BenQ 1650 here in Sydney Australia was picked up for $60AUD

naughty naughty, ya should have tried the Kprobe utility for your Litey before taking it out and installing your new Benq....anyways, i'm only messing with ya, yes, you can use the Nero on the Benq 1650, that's how i do MY scans...since you just got a Benq, download and install THIS utility...QSuite, this will really maximize your burns (Solidburn, Booktype, OverSpeed control, and many other features) :)
http://support.benq.com/files/Storage/Software/QSuite/QSuite%20v2...
don't worry early on with the scores obtained from Nero, once you install and run QSuite, let your Benq burner "learn" the media before giving up...they improve with time/multiple learned pieces :)
also, i'm curious as to which firmware came preinstalled on that Benq 1650 down in Australia...lemme know, i currently use BCHC, but some people have found this firmware problematic (i have no problems with it at all), so give ur current firmware a couple burns before deciding to upgrade or keep ur current firmware :)
good luck with you new drive, i use my Benq 1650 daily and am very pleased with the results :)
using GOOD media, such as Taiyo Yuden in my example, this is what you CAN expect from that Benq burner...

thanks again kivory666.
I hope one day I can get burns like your one. The other trouble is that TY media is almost unheard of down under. I dont know anywhere in Sydney where I can buy this media. There is only one outlet in Melbourne that you can send away for but then u have to pay shipping and handling and as they are the sole source they charge like an angry bull!
As soon as i can get away from the TV (world cup) and get some decent sleep, I will put in the BenQ and will inform which firmware came standard on the drive.
Speaking of which, and this may not be the right forum, If I am installing into my PC which has a DVD ROM as well, should I be putting both the DVD reader and the burner on the same IDE channel or should they be installed so that they are on different IDE channels to each other?
The PC was not put together by me so I don't actually know how it is setup now. I just know that it has 2 hard drives as well right now but they are SATA and therefore not on the IDE channels. Is this correct?

hi behrad,
Quote: If I am installing into my PC which has a DVD ROM as well, should I be putting both the DVD reader and the burner on the same IDE channel or should they be installed so that they are on different IDE channels to each other?
it really doesn't matter to be honest with you, you COULD keep them on the same IDE channel, just make sure you set the jumpers in the back to MASTER and SLAVE ( it's really YOUR choice which to make master and which to keep slave, i PERSONALLY prefer to have my primary burner on master and the "reading/ripping" drive on slave, but you could just as easily reverse this, it shouldn't be a problem) or you could just put them on separate IDE channels, i'm using SATA harddrives right now, so i conveniently put my optical drives on diff. IDEs, but it doesn't matter, what's important is the jumpers on the back to designate between MASTER & SLAVE (if you choose to put it on 1 IDE channel shared) :)
as to your question regarding SATA, if BOTH your current harddrives are SATA, then you will have that extra IDE channel to hookup your new drive to, since everything seems to be working out pretty well for you right now and you plan on replacing your Liteon with the Benq, just make sure the jumpers are set THE SAME WAY on the Benq and simply replace the Liteon with the Benq (easy swap) and plug in the powerconnector and IDE ribbon cable (or round cable if you are using those) and you should be good to go with minimal internal setup changes~ :)
good luck

I finally managed to take time to put in the BenQ.
kivory666 U wanted to know the defult FW of the BenQ here in Australia.
The firmware that is on the drive as an OEM is: BCDC
I also did a test burn on my TDK media and I burned at 16 X to see what happens. Not only did this work out ok, and play fine on the DVD player but it also scored 95 on the Nero speed tool too
Happy happy I am now!!!
Thanks for all the help you have all provided.
Cheers.

congrats... :) yeah, i was just curious as to what the FW on that Benq in Australia were shipping with, if you are getting good results/scores using that particular firmware, just stick with it~ :)
if you get a bit more "adventurous" in the future or a particular 16x rated disc doesn't burn, consider the newer firmwares for a fix~
docTY
p.s. u can see from my scan above that I PERSONALLY have had great success w/ BCHC, others were less fortunate that have tried this firmware...just use what works BEST FOR YOU and your setup :)

thanks kivory666,
Now off I go to find a guide on using my BenQ with Qsuite on this or maybe othe sites. I just need to find out what all the tabs mean and if I should play with the settings.
The one option that puzzles me is the one that lets you play with the power output of the laser! I am not touching it until I know more about this software.
