*STUPID QUESTION PREFACE*
Ok, before everyone jumps to their keyboards and slightly ignores their Ranma 1/2 hentai long enough to call me an idiot for asking such a stupid question, let me explain.
*STUPID QUESTION PREFACE*
I bought this PS2 from a guy on craigslist, mainly because I just needed a new one (my old one had a problem with the drive), but also because he boasted it could play burned games on any format (I didn't really believe the latter part). So I've tried in the last day or so to burn a PS2 iso that I downloaded (KH2) with various different methods with no success. After reading your various topics on this issue, I have decided that the closest I have come to doing the correct thing is:
1. Mounting the ISO using Nero imagedrive
2. Using DVD Decrypter to read the imagedrive and create an iso and MDS file
3. Use DVD Decrypter to write the ISO to a LG 8X DVD-R using my Memorex 16X dual layer DVD burner
Unfortunately, I then pop the final product into the system and I get a familiar red screen telling me that I should enter a PS or PS2 formatted disc. In any other situation, I would just assume that the system isn't modded and that the guy was just a good liar, but the PS2 is definitely modded (at least on the outside). The outside case reads "TEST" in the PS2 case font and colors, but I haven't ever come across anything through google or whatnot to point me to what mod brand or whatever this ps2 came from. The guy on craigslist is next to useless for finding out what's in it, as he bought it from "some guy that writes code for playstation and stuff" that was his neighbor. So I have no idea what I have or what its capable of, but I'm beginning to get frustrated with my waste of DVD-Rs.
So, have any of you heard of a "TEST" ps2? Or do I just have an oddly cased normal ps2? Either way, I'm going to go back to playing Guitar Hero until this matter is resolved.

steps 1 and 2 are unnecessary for starters. And the media you use aren't the best, have a look in the sticky for what to use.
Never heard of a test PS2, it could just have a custom case but you never know, no real way to find out unless you have a backup that you know works (on someone else's PS2) and try it on yours and it doesn't work... it could also be a laser problem too. Easiest way is to open the PS2 and have a look

i'm guessing it's the debugging PS2 Model (DTL-H30001 or DTL-H30002) check on the back of the unit on the sticker to see if that matches up some.
first - The Test PS2 is a debugging tool first and foremost. It is designed to help developers make sure they've done everything correctly. If it played improperly formatted discs then that's one more possible error that could slip through on the way to submission.
If your only goal is to play pirated games picking up a Test unit isn't the smartest thing to do.
also - copy must be a MASTER disk, properly generatend (namely with SONY's CDVDGEN)..however 'loser' released a master disk patcher, a nice free tool, which will patch your Backups so they play in a TEST!
[sidenote-i can't find the disk patcher made by loser as it's
another also - THe Debug Playstations only plays DVD-R disc any other dvd+r/rw will not work. Hope that helps.

that's where i got my information from about TEST/PS2's so if u browse around on there hopefully it could help you out some, please keep us updated either way.
and post what model # it is, because now i'm curious.

Well, I backed up Castlevania: SOTN using just Nero imagedrive and the copy disc procedure (with the ISO) and it works perfectly on the "TEST" machine, I even burned it at 48X. I also checked out the back of the system and behold it is a DTL-H30001 and says "Debugging system for PS2".
Ok, mystery solved. Now I have another question. What procedure/media should I use to get my DVD backups to work correctly, as it seems my PSX backups on CD seem to work just peachy. That site smurff gave is semi helpful, but I'm sure the rest of you have your own opinions on this.

if u read some of the things i said, like playing dvd backs really ain't all that easy on a debug....it's an old debug unit too, the newer ones are the DTL-H50001 or thats the ones i've heard about being the newest.
but here again - the dvd copy must be a MASTER disk, properly generatend (namely with SONY's CDVDGEN)..however 'loser' released a master disk patcher, a nice free tool, which will patch your Backups so they play in a TEST! [as i said i can't find it, but it may still be around but..check development forums since it's basically an SDK] your unit should also have a firewire port on it. do you have the firewire port on it?
do you have a boot disk, u could see if that works?
edit>do you have a game u know works?

Well, I found that diskpatcher3 utility that was mentioned earlier and patched an ISO that I had backed up (Budokai: Tenkachi) and then burned the ISO using DVD Decrypter at 4X on an 8X LG DVD-R and it booted perfectly. I then applied the patcher to my ISO of Kingdom Hearts 2 and burned that ISO at 6X on a 16X TDK DVD-R and it also booted up fine. After those two successes, I'm pretty confident that the test ps2 will play most if not all my dvd backups on the media I have at the moment. This kinda is contrary to all the other stuff you guys mentioned about media and write speeds and so on, but I hope my experience is at least slightly enlightening to others. Thanks again for the help.

the media and write speeds are for retail units, and are give to keep the wear and tear to a minimum, since you have a test/debug unit, it's not retail. u never did answer if u had the firewire port.
