Good morning to everyone,

Within the last week, McAfee 8.0 (with DAT 4797) has been throwing alerts specifying that there has been a GenericDownloader.ab (file detected as srvurh[1].exe [move/clean failed]) and QLowZones-15 (file detected win4c.tmp [was deleted successfully]) detection. I have turned off WinXP System Restore, as advised, and have performed Anti-Virus scans and Ad-Aware scans in safemode, during the scan no viruses or crapware was detected. These alerts are thrown in most of the time when I am browsing the internet or open up a new Internet Explorer window. I have enclosed a copy of the HijackThis logfile incase any body is able to help.

Thank you for your time.

Hi 1Spaniard.

You don't have a firewall on your computer. Download and install one firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls:
ZoneAlarm --> http://www.zonelabs.com
Kerio--> http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
Outpost-> http://www.agnitum.com

If you used windows firewall, disable it after installing new firewall.

Ok, you got some infections on your computer....

Cleaning instructions:

Move HijackThis into its own folder C:\HJT

Download and install Ewido Anti-Spyware 4.0 -> http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

-> Open Ewido Anti-Spyware
-> Click the Update icon at the top of the window
-> Click the Start update button
-> Wait for the update to download and install
-> Quit the program, we'll use this later.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop -> http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
Do NOT run yet.

Run HijackThis. Press Do a system scan only, then close all other windows, checkmark the following entries and press Fix checked

O16 - DPF: {97B79133-88F0-45F0-8D57-0F2EF27D9C66} - http://85.255.114.166/1/rdgUS2404.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winkoh32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winkoh32.dll

Make your hidden files visible -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html
Restart your computer to the safemode -> http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Delete these files (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winkoh32.dll

Run ATF Cleaner -> Check select all -> Press Empty selected

-> Open Ewido Anti-Spyware
-> Click the Scanner icon at the top of the window
-> Click the Settings tab then select Recommended Options and choose Quarantine
-> Click the Scan tab
-> Select Complete System Scan. The scanning begins.

-> When the scan has completed:
-> If infections were found you'll be prompted about what to do.
-> Please make sure that the Set all elements to is set to Quarantine (in downleft corner of the window)
-> Then press Apply all actions and answer yes to all if it asks about something
-> Click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop.
-> Copy and paste the scan results into your next post

Restart your computer normally.

Post the following logs to here:
-> a fresh HijackThis log
-> Ewido's log

I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Hi JaPK,

I have followed your instructions and below are the results of my scan and a new HiJakcThis log. The log of the scan will show "no action taken" because I saved the log before I applied "all the actions". I would also like to mention that after performing this, I still recieved an Alert from McAfee regadring the QLowZones-15 (detected as bgates[1].exe [move/clean failed]).

I also do not have the firewall enabled because I am behind a corporate hardware firewall.

Ok, I need you to do something before we can continue the cleaning process...

Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

Unzip it (folder named SmitFraudFix) to your desktop:

Open the folder SmitfraudFix and doubleclick smitfraudfix.cmd
Choose option #1 - Search by typing 1 and pressing "Enter"; a textfile opens and lists the infected files (if those exist)

Post the contents of this textfile to here.

(Some antiviruses recognises process.exe as a malware. It is not malware, it is a program that stops processes)

I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

JaPK,

I think that this problem may involve too much of our time and I think the best solution to this is just to reload my system. I thank you for your time.

hello, i have had the same problem listed above. i tried the solution you provided for 1spaniard but was unable to find the same entries in HijackThis. i'm thinking that my computer is set up diferently so it might be a little different. i'm on windows xp home sp2. i've run the newest mcafee, ad-aware, and spybot and they've returned nothing. a copy of my hijackthis log follows. it would be greatly appreciated if you could help me with this problem.

thank you very much.

Almost clean :)

Fix this entry with HijackThis:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winhoo32 - winhoo32.dll (file missing)

Reboot and post a fresh HjT log to here.

I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Ok good, you're clean now :)

Make your hidden files hidden again.

Now you can empty Ewidos Quarantine:
-> Open Ewido
-> Select "Infections"
-> Click "Select all"
-> Click "Remove finally"
-> Close Ewido

You should update your Java (old version has all kinds of vulnerabilities)

1. Click "Start"-> "Control panel" -> Double-click Java icon (coffee cup)
2. Move to "Update" tab and update Java by clicking "Update Now". After that do a restart.
3. If you can't make automatic update, get new version manually from here -> http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
4. After updating, uninstall the old Java (if found) from Add/Remove Programs, named as
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

Now that you're clean, here are some tips how to stay clean.

-> Stand Up and Be Counted, Malware Complaints -> http://www.malwarecomplaints.info
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

-> Clear your system restore -> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore...
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process. Remember to create a new restore point after the cleaning.

-> Use CCleaner -> http://www.ccleaner.com
Download and install CCleaner. Clean your registry and temporary files with it regularly.

-> Use Ad-Aware -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

-> Use Ewido -> http://www.ewido.net/en
Download and install Ewido. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

-> Install SpywareBlaster -> http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed to your computer.

-> Install MVPS Hosts file -> http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

-> Change your browser to Firefox -> http://www.mozilla.org
Firefox is faster, safer and quicker browser than Internet Explorer.

-> Keep your systen up-to-date -> http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Visit Windows Update regularly.

-> Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.

-> Read this article by TonyKlein -> http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stay clean ;)

I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Hi, I'm a newbie and I also need HELP.

I'm having the same problem as above. My McAfee keeps alerting me to QLowZones-15 and Downloader.ab, and it can't do anything about it!

Originally I was alerted to a Vundo infection after opening a malicious file.

I have used Symantec's FixVundo and Atribune's VundoFix as well as SmitfraudFix. I've also used Search and Destroy. I tried the above suggestions-- ewido, a-squared Web Malware Scanner, and ATF Cleaner.

I've also turned off System Restore as suggested.

Below is what HijackThis logs:

Hi JaPK!

I am also infected with the QLowZones-15/Generic Downloader AB.

I have followed the instructions you gave the other guys, but the popups still come. I am running Mcafee, Ewido,MS Defender beta 2,prevx1 and Xofspy(not se). All of these are updated. I have dones scans in Safe Mode, nothing comes up. PC is on a Domain, running XP2 & IE7Beta3. XP firewall is ON with no Exeptions.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi, I didn't notice that had posted too :)

Please enable your system restore.

Ok, you got some infections on your computer....

Cleaning instructions:

-> Open Ewido Anti-Spyware

O1 - Hosts: 66.98.136.25 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.136.25 auto.search.msn.es
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmbj32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmbj32.dll

Make your hidden files visible -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html
Restart your computer to the safemode -> http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Delete these files (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmbj32.dll

Run ATF Cleaner -> Check select all -> Press Empty selected

-> Open Ewido Anti-Spyware
-> Click the Scanner icon at the top of the window
-> Click the Settings tab then select Recommended Options and choose Quarantine
-> Click the Scan tab

-> a fresh HijackThis log
-> Ewido's log

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@jsploftey

Ok good, I need some more information. By the way, do you know the location of the virus?

Please run a sacn with WinPFind and post its log to here, instructions -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Please post a fresh HijackThis log to here too.

I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Hi JaPK!
I ran CCleaner, ATF Cleaner and CleanUp, Ewido, Ad-Aware, Mcafee,XoftSpySE in Safe-Mode. Then I ran Prevx1 in normal, and nothing was picked up. Everything went well this morning, then suddenly the Mcafee popups appear again. I didn't visit any dodgy sites either.

The path of the viruses according to Mcafee are:
\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\SQPV044J\srvrcc[1].exe Generic Downloader.ab (Trojan)

\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\JR67R1VQ\srvque[1].exe Generic Downloader.ab (Trojan)

\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\LW76RTNM\bgates[1].exe\BGATES[1].EXE QLowZones-15 (Trojan)

Then Prevx1 picks up some TMP files under Windows\Temp

Here are the logs requested.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi again sploftey.

Cleaning instructions:

-> Open Ewido Anti-Spyware

Make your hidden files visible -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html
Restart your computer to the safemode -> http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Run HijackThis. Press Do a system scan only, then close all other windows, checkmark the following entries and press Fix checked

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winfcm32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winfcm32.dll

Delete these files (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winfcm32.dll

Run ATF Cleaner -> Check select all -> Press Empty selected

-> Open Ewido Anti-Spyware
-> Click the Scanner icon at the top of the window
-> Click the Settings tab then select Recommended Options and choose Quarantine
-> Click the Scan tab

You're clean now :)

Now you should make your hidden files hidden again.

4. After updating, uninstall the old Java (if found) from Add/Remove Programs, named as
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3

Now that you're clean, here are some tips how to stay clean.

-> Stand Up and Be Counted, Malware Complaints -> http://www.malwarecomplaints.info
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

-> Clear your system restore -> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore...
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process. Remember to create a new restore point after the cleaning.

-> Use CCleaner -> http://www.ccleaner.com
Download and install CCleaner. Clean your registry and temporary files with it regularly.

-> Use Ad-Aware -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

-> Use Ewido -> http://www.ewido.net/en
Download and install Ewido. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

-> Install SpywareBlaster -> http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed to your computer.

-> Install MVPS Hosts file -> http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

-> Change your browser to Firefox -> http://www.mozilla.org
Firefox is faster, safer and quicker browser than Internet Explorer.

-> Keep your systen up-to-date -> http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
