What are you planing on running, or are you just starting out and reading stuff about ps2 modding? If you are just reading about .elf files, you have a lot of reading ahead of you ;)

There are a lot of programs out there, and it can get a little tiring trying to figure out what they do. If you have any questions about the termanology, just let us know.

Terminology - The technical or special terms used in a business, art, science, or special subject.

Depending on what PS2 you have (slim or fat) determines what kind of mod you will be able to do.

For playing backups, all PS2s can be chipped. Chipping bypasses the protection on a PS2 that can tell whether or not a disc inserted is a vaild PS2 disc or not.

Chipping is not the only method of bypassing the PS2 disc validation. Other methods include Swap Disc, ARMax and memory card exploit (only available on "fat" PS2)

You can do two things with a PS2: you can play backup games, or for the more advanced users, run programs.

You don't need to be a programmer to run programs, you just need to know how to run them and what they do. The programs that you can run range from emulators to media players.

When running programs, you will encounter a lot of .elf files, but you will need a method to select which file that you want to run. This is where an elf launcher comes in.

Launchers are your starting point if you are going to want to select from a list of different programs. One of the most popular launchers out there is uLaunchELF. Other would be like MYPS2 or keylauncher.

This is about all i can tell you for now. You need to figure out what it is you want to do with your PS2.
