Are grinding/screeching/scratching noises a normal operation for playing backups? The noises only occur when the laser tries to read the disc.

So far, I've only burned my games through DVD Decrypter at 4x with Sony D11 DVD+R. My PS2 is a version 4.

That is happening because the surface of the disc that is being grabbed by the PS2 is too slick for it to hold on to. When you hear that sound, the disc is spinning freely.

You can fix this by adding duct tape to the center of your backups and trimming off the excess or modifying the magnetic gripper inside of your PS2. You would have to open up your PS2 and add a small amount of silicon sealant to the surface of the grabber.

Sometimes this works for me... Stand up your PS2 instead.

Ahhhh, big thanks for the explanation, I was worried something was wrong.

The top of my PS2 is actually off to do swaps so I can't really get it to stand up without having the magnetic-disc top fall off.

By "grabber", are you talking about the white magnetic piece? Well there be any harm done if this isn't fixed?

Thanks.

If you don't fix it, it's not that big of a deal. Eventually though, you will start to see fine scratches on the center of your discs. It does get to the point where it will slip so much when the disc is spinning up, that it will not be able to be read.

Silicon isn't too expensive, and since you already have the grabber accessable, I would try to put some on it. You can find it pretty cheap at auto parts stores. It is usually called something like weather stripping silicon.
