hey, i really dont know much about the build of the PS2 or any of the technical terms, .. but umm today my ps2 stopped working! if i put a disc in, a black screen comes on and stays there... if theres no disc in it it will take me to the regular browsing screen. The PS2 is a lil more than a year old.. I was playing Kingdom Hearts 2, and the loading took a very long time, now it just wont load at all. I tried loading a DvD and CD as well, nothing's working. Is my Ps2 dead ? :(

what version is your PS2? It could be that your laser is dead or dying

i dont know how to tell the version.. just that its a slim... since my post, after so many attempts i got another game to play, played it for a lil, then switched to kingdom hearts 2 and it was fine. when i was done i unplugged the AC adaptor but now again today, im having the same problem... the basketball game loaded AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS (switching it on and off) and tried to switch it over again to KH2... didnt work... maybe my laser is dying... it only works when it wants to >:(

mate. i don't know much my self but i have ur exact slim ps2. and i had similar problems. and once my bro tried cleaning the disc instead.it worked perfectly.
hope that helps ya. clean the disc in the right way and careful

If you have a V12, it could be that the laser is dying - V12s have a problem with its laser.. also do you use swap magic or modchip or is this an original game?

had it workin after my second post, after about 9000000000 attempts then my boyfriend came over and dropped it by accident when he was moven the control... that didnt make it any better.. or worse i suppose, the same stuff is still happening:

sometimes it wont spin AT ALL, and that stupid black screen pops up.

sometimes it will, but will bring me to the browser menu, ill select read disc, then it will just bring me back to the browser menu (where it shows the graphic of the memory card )

sometimes ill get lucky on my 50,000th try resetting it and KH2 or ESPN will actually load. once it does, the game play is flawless and no slow loading times..

i checked that page i do have a v12... spch70012 HAHA JUST MY LUCK! and nope... mine is not modded at all...this is just buggen me lots, all i wanna do is beat the friggen game, never see a black screen again, and ill be done posting here and whining lol

tried everything, settin it up vertical instead of horizontal, cooling it with a fan, cleanin the discs.......

so i assume ill be lookin at replacing the laser eh? how much is that usually and does Sony offer it? ( ive had it for more than one year so im not under warranty anymore )

V12 lasers die on you after a bit of use (usually JUST after a year when your warranty runs out)

Have a look on http://www.ps2parts.com/ , if you know how to replace it yourself or know someone who'll do it for you that's great, otherwise I think these guys would replace the laser for you for free if you send your console to them (you have to cover return postage)

although it might seems abit unprofessional and weird. i would advice you to try this: lightly spit on the disc and softly rub it with a piece of cloth. that's what my bro did when we had the same problem. and i heard in another thread that also tooth paste might work. so just give it a try. you've got nothing to loose. and it might work.
