would anyone happen to know whether or not the Matshita UJ-831S can burn dl dvds. I think I made a huge mistake in buying DL dvds. Thanks in advanced.

Yes it should be able to write at 2.4x to a +R Dual Layer disk.

Tools like VSO Inspector, DVDInfoPro, Nero Info Tools will scan your drive, and tell you everything you need to know about your drive, what it can read, what it can write etc...
