Hi guys,

I have been asked to find out what the fastest and most efficient way to get an image onto the top of a disc.

I need to know average times for printing to the discs surface so I can calculate how long the entire job will take.

for example:

Inkjet printing:
time =
Lightscribe:
time =
etc etc

If anyone can help me on this one it would be much appreciated. Also any suggestions will be most welcome.

Thank You

Quality = Time.
Printing a disc adhesive label for me takes something like 30 seconds excluding any set up time or sticking it on the disc.
Printing Lightscribe depends on what you print, Text is a couple of mins, a full picture is 25 mins.
Printing direct to disc with a compatible printer I have never tried but the results i've seen look good to me and I would imagine its a similar time to printing on a paper label.

Other things to note:
1) Adhesive labels can come off, and rumour has it they are not good for the reliability of the discs but unproven.
2) Lightscribe discs are expensive and the print is Greyscale (like black & white but it does look proffessional)and you also need a Lightscribe burner, & enabled software.
3)Printable discs can cost a few pence more than normal but not sure about the costs of consumables for the capable printers.
4) Consider how proffesional the job needs to be, how much you can spend etc.

PC Specs: CPU-C2D E8400, M/B-P5N-E SLI, RAM 4Gig OCZ Platinum rev2 ,VGA- Nvidia 8800GT 512MB, HDD- Hitachi Deskstar SATAII 1TB, 250Gig Maxtor IDE HDD.
Corsair HX520 PSU, Liteon Lightscribe DVD Writer, Pioneer BluRay drive.

I can report on first hand knowledge that stickies are a no-no on DVD`s.

Unless someone was intending too print a few million Discs at one sitting, would printing time for one disc be of great importance?

Good quality adhesive labels do not come off discs. Too bad, because they are proven to damage the disc in terms of changing the tilt of the disc at the outer edge if the material is paper. Paper labels that do not extend very far onto the disc have less of a problem, and polyester labels have little effect on tilt because they do not expand and contract the way paper does.

Ink-jet printing onto printable discs is the best and fastest way to get good colored discs unless the volume of identical discs exceeds 500. At volumes of 500 or 1,000 or more, silk-screen printing done by duplicators with the proper equipment is the best and least expensive way to label.
