I've been buying Verbatim 25 packs at Best Buy which have always worked great. You can burn them up to 6x although I prefer to burn them at 2.4x. Saw some Ritek at Supermediasrore. Wonder if I should take a chance at it (since the 8x single layer -R works well) or just stick with the Verbatims?

Verbatim invented DL discs, and all DL drives are compatible with them. Ritek is producing a tremendous amount of DL discs, and their quality/expertise is catching up; but firmware support is still not quite as good as that for Verbatim. DL discs will be dropping in cost/price once factories move to IS (inverse stack) production instead of the 2P (double polymer) process that requires a temporary photo polymer stamper to be UV cured and thrown away. That material cost and the reduction of contamination will improve yields enough to reduce manufacturing costs and concomitant pricing enough to make DL look like it is a better deal. However, almost no one except Lite-on is including firmware in their latest drives to work with IS DL discs; and all older DL drives--largely unsupported these days--will not be able to record IS 8X discs.

Of course, the immediate reaction from those with older drives is that "Ritek 8X sucks." Inverse stack is the way of the future for DL discs. Unfortunately, that means everyone willing to record on DL will have to buy a new drive.
