Hello, I have been using a DVD Burner that came with my computer and it burns fine, but when I put it in my dvd player, the movie is fine, except it skips sometimes. I am using DVD Shrink to rip it and DVD Decrypter to burn it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello.

The three common causes for this skipping behavior are.

1. using poorer quality blank media.
2. burning too fast.
3. not keeping burner firmware up to date.

Good quality media are those manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Fuji and Sony labeled as Made in Japan.

A good rule of thumb is to burn at 1/2 or less the rated speed of the media. The poorer the quality of the media is, the more important it is to reduce burn speed.

Firmware updates can be found at the web site of the burner's manufacturer or here:

Since you have DVD Decrypter you can use it to check for firmware updates;

Tools > Drive > Check for Firmware Updates...

Everything laddyboy is saying it completely true and a huge part of a successful back up. I wanted to share my current experience just in case it could help. I upgraded to a new burner from a drive that was 2 years old and it is skipping playing source DVD's and on burns. When I play the burned copy in the drive as well as other dvd players it skips too. Depending on how old your system is, it may be a bad IDE cable. This is what I have troubleshooted my issue down to. Play a regular retail DVD in your burner and see if that skips too. If it does it may be the cable or the current drive configuration may need to be switched around. Again, I don't know how old your system is and it doesn't seem as excessive as my issue, but wanted to share anyway. Good luck to you.

Hi! Memorex sucks. Use media from Japan, like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony and Fuji made in Japan. You can't go wrong with any of those. Supermediastore.com is a good source fo Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x and it works great. Supermediastore usually has free shipping. I believe that is what Laddyboy reccomends,also.

Unfortunately Memorex rebrands some of the worst media from some of the poorest quality manufacturers.

Good media is made by Taiyo Yuden (media code TY) (available online) and Verbatim (media code MCC). You can find Made in Japan (MIJ) labeled Fuji and Sony media in office supply stores and electronic stores but you have to hunt through the stacks of cake boxes. I've found MIJ labeled Sony blanks at Sam's Club in the U.S. as well. MIJ labeled Fuji and Sony is almost always manufactured by Taiyo Yuden which is why we point people in that direction.

An over looked connection which effects similiar results is multitasking and even being connected to the internet will suffice if a program automatically looks for an update.
