Sony RDR-HXD710: EPG timer auto extend functionality

We purchased a Sony RDR-HXD710 late last year and have been delighted with it.

During the world cup we got really let down with 2 matches. For the first we set the timer though the EPG (Electronic programme guide), assuming that it worked like Video Plus, that if the match went on longer because of extra time it would be recorded. We were dismayed to find out that the recoding just stopped 2 minute into extra time.

Reading the manual on page 52 it says "This recorder is featured with an EPG timer auto extend functionality that allows EPG timer recording to be made in case of broadcast early start (before the scheduled start) or broadcast late finishing (after the scheduled end time)"

Thinking there must have been an error I tried it again for the Germany v Argentina quarter final. We were devastated when the recording stopped at the end of extra time, we did not know the result and had to listen to it on the news :-)

Is there some setting I have to do to make the auto extend functionality kick in?
