The little i know on these two formats is that the -R is supposed to be for video purpose(but there's a lot of people using it for different purposes) and the +R is supposed to be for data storage and video purpose. The latter is,if i'm right the latest format compared to the -R and uses latest technology. You can use both for burning movies,videos,data,etc.....

However for greater compatibility as stated in other threads, the +R format takes the first place as it can be booktyped into DVD-ROM,format which normally all stand alone DVD players are supposed to play. But if your drive doesn't support the booktype feature, then the use of -R format is more advisable as between a -R media and a +R media(non-booktyped),the first one offers greater compatibility than the another one.

From my point of view, except for the booktype capability for the +R format,i don't see any big difference between these two formats, although the one i cherish is the +R one.

It also depends on the person's taste(just like between vanilla and chocolate ice-cream)and settings on their system too, some gets better results with one and some others get better with the another one.

Now if there's anyone who knows more differences among these two formats, please join in and we'll all learn.

here is an well written article on +R vs. -R media...... why one is better than the other...... keep in mind it's an opinion and both are good if you use good media! Here is a media guide:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

You can use DVDInfo Pro, DVDIndentifier, Nero InfoTool and other programs that will tell you what manufacterers ID your disk is. Keep in mind to use good media will prevent a lot of maladies and keep you on a better DVD burning path making your experience more pleasant with a quality produced finalize DVD! Now, what programs do you use?

Forget DigitaFAQ. It's almost worthless as a reference and full of errors.

Digital FAQ lists the "manufacturer" as the source of the discs in too many cases. CMC makes a huge portion and perhaps most of TDK's and Verbatim's discs. Verbatim is not even in the top eight manufacturers of optical discs anymore. The author assumes "success rate" is an indicator of quality. It is not. It is a measure of compatibility and perhaps quality, but no mention of any quality measurements is given.

Most measurements from a blank or recorded disc are dependent on a system that includes a laser diode, command sets, and a servo motor. Unless each is calibrated to a standard such as a Sony/Philips calibration disc, it is hit or miss in trying to determine which is accurate. Calibrated Pulstec drives are very expensive, and I doubt the author uses one. DigitalFAQ is a measure of compatibility with unknown drives, not a listing of disc quality.

well......I'll still use this media guide as a template that is better than no guide at all! And for what ever it's worth....they may make the assumption of compatibility and success rates as quality.... that's all that matters to me, because I want to know what disk would be compatible to players or burners and this way I can burn and be satisfied that their ASSUMPTIONS will work for me! And success rates = quality.... well that's for debate and I don't care.... I'll take success rates into account as part of QUALITY, too. Soooooo, for the most part.... their guide does have merit and if some of the testing that they do does not come up to HIGH STANDARDS then I want to see the HIGH STANDARDS that we are talking about and maybe someone can do a better job of it...... until then, until someone shows me a better media guide, I'll just have to make due with DigitalFAQ's media guide.
