Hi

I need to buy some dual or double layer media to burn some dvd videos. I'm still not sure of the difference between dual and double (dual is -R and double is +r?).

Which discs are better to buy in terms of getting them to playback well on most stand alone players, -r or +r? And which brands? I usually stick to verbatim, the 4.7gb dvds have been great, but I have no experience with dual/double layer.

I've read you can do something called bitsetting on only DVD+R which lets them be played on more drives than DVD-R or DVD+R without bitsetting? Your burner must be compatible?

I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-108, firmware version 1.20. Actually looking at it now, I can see it says it only reads and writes DVD+R DL, and not DVD-R DL. I guess that narrows it down then, unless there is a way I can upgrade the firmware to enable DVD-R? Will my drive be able to perform bitsetting on DVD+R dual layer discs? I cannot find any information relating to bitsetting or booktyping with my drive.

Would like to learn more about this, any information welcome, thanks!

You can try this with DVDInfo Pro or

try this using NEC ...... I think your drive could be a rebadged NEC or Sony .... either case you should be able to booktype... it's worth a try. good luck. Let me know how you make out. I have a Philips 8631 drive, which is a rebadged BenQ and used DVDInfo Pro to set my booktyping..... if you want to know more about booktyping, then read this:

http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

Also, Nero automatically sets the booktyping to DVD-ROM.... you can try Nero and find out, too!

Thanks for the reply IHOE

I read the guide you posted which said Pioneer drives do not support bitsetting, but there are unofficial/hacked firmwares I could upgrade to which might allow it. I am currently researching this as I know it's risky to install an unoffical firmware. DvdInfoPro also tells me my drive doesn't support bitsetting when I try to click on the +RW settings button. In Nero under the options for my drive, there is no booktyping section (I guess cuz it's a Pioneer?).

Any ideas on which DL DVD+R to buy? I should be able to use these even if I don't get bitsetting going.

Thanks!

Verbatim is the best DL out there now! You can't go wrong with those babies..... I think they are RICOHJPN which is a good manufacturer ID.

Also, in Nero it's just a tick box that automatically booktypes... I think it's a setting .... I'm sorry I don't know where it is for I hardly use Nero.... just occationally..... and mine is already checked off to booktype automatically to DVD-ROM. sorry I can't help you find the box to tick off.

Did you try using DVDDecrypter to change booktype under NEC or LG?

and if you don't have this free program, you should!

Thanks for the quick reply, good, I'll go for the verbatims.

Also, I just read on another forum (the firmware page) that my drive, the Pioneer DVR-108 AUTOMATICALLY bitsets DL +R dvd to dvd-rom! So I don't have to do anything except burn the disc (and check in Nero to be sure). However my drive does this only for dual layer media and no settings regarding to bitsetting can be made with the offical firmwares, obviously it would be better if I can bitset on both single and dual layer discs so I'll probably change the firmware to enable this.

Can you reccommend a good place to order verbatim dl's online for the uk? If not, don't bother posting back, you have helped lots already.

Thank you!

I love Afterdawn and it's no problem posting back with a reply...... but unfortuately I don't know any online sites for you to order media for the UK. But, there are plenty of members from the UK here so I would ask in a new thread in the Meida forum titled NEED ONLINE STORE FOR UK MEDIA DELIVERY or something like that and you'll get your responces!

LDee,

There is no firmware (official or hacked) that I am aware of that will enable your pioneer 108 to bitset DVD5 DVD+R media. There is the buffalo f/w for later models. I didn't even think they would bitset DVD+R DL media. After you have made a DL burn, verify it has been booktyped dvd-rom with dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and let me know if it did in fact booktype to dvd-rom if you don't mind.

IHoe,

Verbatim DL media is made by Misubishi Kagaku Media (MKM) not Ricohjpn.

IHoe,

I know there were some verbatim dvd5's made by ricohjpn at one time but they are very rare and are now being made by mitsubishi chemical company. I'm fairly sure all the verbatim DL media is made by MKM.

Sorry to butt into this thread, but I was also wondering which brand would be best for DVD+/-R DL's, preferably inkjet printable ones. I was considering the following:

- Ricoh DVD+R 2.4X DL D2RDDW5CW
- VERBATIM DVD+R 8,5 GB 2,4x
- Ritek Ridata Double Layer 2.4X DVD+R DL White Inkjet Printable

As a little side question, which burning program would be best for DL's?

Verbatim DL media is most recommended. If you want a 1:1 copy I would use DVD Decrypter or imgburn to burn. ISO read, then ISO write.

Thanks Mort81. I figured the Verbatims were pretty good quality.
Regarding software, I was considering to:
1. use DVD Decrypter to remove security and rip as files on my HDD
2. Us CloneDVD to burn (setting on DVD DL)

The reason would be that if a DVD9 is completely filled up, I think it exceeds the 8.5GB of a DVD+R DL, and as such some shrinking would be required, or am I wrong?
