I'm external on the burner and the only reliable way I can burn -R's is firewire. USB 2.0 is shakey. The burner has no problems whatsoever with +R and +RW. A friend of mine has an internal model of same manufacture and it's behavior is the same, plus from one DVD to another, it has a chapter looping problem.

Model DRX500ULX. And thanks for asking...I only bought it last week and when I started having the aforementioned problem I went to Sony and found... 1) as new as it was the firmware was at level "c" and they have a patcher to take it to level "f". So that's been taken care of. And, 2) they have a diagnostic routine for testing your drive, that told me the firmware level and then proceeded to fail all the relative test. So I called then...by way of a text message at the end of the test...and they very cordially told me that this behavior is normal on all units. I asked why they bothered to put this little broken piece of fluff on the web, but they did not have a satisfactory answer. Furthermore, my concern was really whether the unit was functional on the "-" side. At their suggestion, I loaded some of their software like NowDX and VideoShow something and was able to erase my -RW. Since my problem was pretty much with DVDXCOPY, I then tried to duplicate my copy of National Lampoon's, Christmas with Chevy Chase. The USB burn jammed the buffer to max and produced a coaster. Then I went over to the firewire side of the burner and viola! Slow and successful and only on that DVD. I will have to try same on the Express version to see what it does. Frankly, I hope "+" wins the battle!

i would suggest if your not happy with it at the moment take it back and get a diffrent dvd drive as it is only a week old the shop where you bought it from has to take it back..if it's faulty (so fry it ).
i use the pioneer ,why not get an internal drive ??if you have no ide slots left get an pci ide add on card .

Took the last thread of advice and returned external for internal Sony 510A. Buffering is a lot better, but DVDXCOPY is acting weird. It produced 2 R+ coaster, while Express created a -RW of the same movie?!?

Think if I can get the kinks worked out I'll stick with the 510A as the buffering routines (whether making a copy or a coaster) are more stable and don't max out. That and the speed is better for the most part. I would appreciate your telling me more regarding the use of Nero on the how-to nuts and bolts of your copying. I am using 5.5.10.28, but I mostly use that for Cdr's and haven't really thought of using for DVD's. Your input is appreciated!

Guessing that my Nero is current enough to use, what program (s) are necessary to complete (rip) translation so that Nero can burn to a usable format(i.e. what else are you using?)?I've noticed that a lot of burners and programs like DVDXCOPY don't have to much trouble with +R/+RW, but on some older DVD players where -R/-RW is most likely to work, if is kind of if'y. Sounds like you had a lot of success and I guess I'd rather start out emulating than create the wheel all over again.

lo again well to rip dvd's i use dvd decrypter and if the dvd it to big i use a program called dvd shrink to as you guessed shrink it.
now if it's not a dvd i use tmpge to convert to mpeg the tmpge author to make my vobs .
if you run into trouble (everyone does ) most of the time it's codecs or fine tunning of the program .
just spend a couple of hrs trolling these boards like i did there's every answer you need here ....

Thanks...guess I'll give it a try and see how it works. I'll be interested in seeing if copying a dvd is more forgiving with dirrerent types of media (i.e. +R vs -R). Not surprisingly, with the burner I have (Sony), it seems to prefer the +R/+RW formats. Some of the 2 year old standalone players seem to like the
-R varities. Must go to money tree in the back yard and pick some for purchase of more blanks.
