Can anyone please help. I have been using DVD Shrink for a couple of years, no problem. Now on one of my computers (I run 2) halfway through the backup, my computer shuts down. I try it on my other computer and dvd copies fine. I have tried uninstalling DVD Shrink and reinstalling, but it still does it. It does it with old and new dvds alike. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it, thanks.

welcome salomy to the forum,

i had this same problem about 6 months ago, and the reason why my computer was shuting down is because my processor was overheating when running shrink or any other heavy processing program like Nero recode2 too. the cause for my processor overheating was because of DUST!! i had a lot of dust and it filled my heatsink above the proccesorr thus not letting the CPU fan do its job and keep it from overheating. also right before this prob happen to me it seemed like when i ran shrink it was taking longer than normal.
Anyway i cleaned out all the dust and tried shrink and everything worked great and normal again.

BTW when i run shrink now it seems like it goes a lot faster than it ever did, before even the problem happened
repost to see if this works because im curious to know if this was the prob.

hi salomy,

Download this profram called SpeedFan, it moniters ur CPU temp and other temps and the speeds of ur fans. once u install it open the program and then run shrink and see how high ur temp is,

Does ur PC shut down when running any other program or just shrink?
Does ur PC never shut down unless u r using shrink?

do that speedfan because then u will see if ur CPU is overheating thus causing the PC to shutdown, if so there could be other reasons causing ur PC 2 shut down
heres link for that program

Just another thought, I might not have cleaned it out properly, I took the casing off and cleaned all the dust out of the fan, do I need to take it apart to get behind the fan is that possible?

Hi there, thanks for the quick reply, will try to download speedfan and give that a go, it only shuts down on dvdshrink, but once it shut down when I was burning some dvd files, so you are probably right with your diagnosis, will try this speedfan next.

Not sure what u mean? take what apart?, the CPU FAN?

Also what i used was one of those spray cans that blows air out of, i think they are called Dust Off, those work great.

u have to make sure u get all of the dust out, i would take both of the side covers off of the tower and make sure u get the dust out of the CPU fan and if u have a heatsink make sure all the dust is out of that.

Do u have a heatsink over ur CPU?

sorry but you are talking to someone who just had to look on net to find out what a heatsink looked like, I think I do have one, problem is I must get the computer back out of its home to take it to bits again to have another look which I will do this evening. I have downloaded speedfan and the temps look pretty high to me but I dont know what they are supposed to be. While the computer is just running the Temp 1 is 52 and Temp 2 is 79. I tried running shrink and the temp 2 went up to the high 90's and shut down, sounds to me like maybe the fan isnt working or could still be dust, what should the temp be?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. All sorted. I took the casing off again and cleaned out the dust that I couldnt see before which was behind the fan, have just run shrink and it worked fine, temp didnt go above 65. Thanks for your time and advice, couldnt have done it without you. All the best.

glad 2 hear u fixed the problem, and also the TEMP 2 on SpeedFan is ur CPU Temp, and Temp 1 is overall temp of the PC, just to clear that up.
