Hi there,

Why does it do this ?

I do not know, but all I know is both my NEC drives do that.

All the time ? No, but often.

As long as it burns the DVD media in it, I don't care if Windows calls it a ShringBing Drive :) as long as it burns it !!!

@Layzee

Before you start to think that maybe the problems come from your burner or from any software you're using,first you should try to see if the problem doesn't come from the media itself,i.e MEMOREX.Dude!Memorex is way far down in the bottom of the medias ranking.See if you get the same problem if you use better quality medias.You can use Taiyo medias or even verbatim medias.

I use verbatim made by Taiyo and i never experience any problem till now.Before i used to burn on some cheap and crap medias and got a lot of different problems but since got into AD,finally stop with all these stuffs and use only top notch medias.And results,they're always flawless!!!

Use the good stuff and you'll see the difference!

Yes, using memorex media might be the problem. I would definitely use Taiyo Yuden Media or Verbatim Media but for the problem of readind as a blank cd it is more windows fault than anything. When windows XP or any other Windows for that matter came out DVD burners were just getting started and that is why on mine and yours the dvd burner says blank cd and cd drive under explorer because Windows XP does not write to Blank DVDs. As long as your burner burns dvds well with Nero ot IMGBURN it is fine. Also, I would definitely not use Memorex media because it is crap, stick to the media we have reccommmended and your compatibility will go way up and your burns are much better.

Does this also happen when you insert a formatted DVD or a DVD with data or video already written on it? I think the burner doesn't recognize the DVD as anything until it is formatted. I never noticed, but I'm sure if you check Nero for disc info, it'll tell you there's a blank disc in the drive.
