Right howdy ho ppl

Thanks to some helpful advice on here and some further research i have just purchased an epsom r220 for all my printing needs- should arrive in a couple of days so i have warned my girlfriend that i am going to lock myself in the room and waste lots of ink printing my backups etc!

Now i asked a few guys in some shops about what sort of paper is used in cd inserts (as i am in a band) and dvd covers and they were of no help so i thought i would check with some of the oracles on here. so....

What sort of paper is the 'glossy' lightweight stuff normally used for dvd covers?

Is it inkjet compatible?

Also as a complete newbie to all this (but learning something new everyday thanks to AD)

What is the difference between DVD-R and +r? ( not just definitions but as in everyday advantages/disadvantages)

I am currently using verbatim print compatible 16x DVD-R. would i be better off using the +r for any reason?

Thanks in advance guys!

P.S When it comes to what inks to use i an R220 do i go with the epsom ones or cheaper alternative versions? i have read that the non epsoms can fade after a while.

sorry for all the questions!

Concerning your question regarding the difference between DVD-R and +R,go to the link below and you'll get some light.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/359042

Just a quick recap about the link,if your burner supports bitsetting/booktyping,better use the +R format as once booktyped to DVD-ROM,it will be much more compatible than the -R(which cannot be booktyped) on any stand alone player(whatever new ones or old ones).

Now about which paper to use for dvd covers(as you say it),some other members who are more qualified about that may be able to give you the required infos.Unfortunately for me,i'm not in any band,so a sharpie just to write on the DVD is just fine :)

I use Glossy photo paper. Yes it is ink jet compatible. You just need to let it sit, for a few hours, to dry, before you cut the cover out, and slide it in a case. If it's not dry, it will smear, when you slide it in a case. I get mine at Big Lots. You can get photo paper almost anywhere (Wal Mart, Staples, Kmart, drug stores, etc.).

I buy the generic inks from online stores. It's much cheaper, and I've seen no problems with it. I'll keep using it, until I do have problems.
Here is a couple of stores to buy ink:

http://www.supermediastore.com/epson-stylus-photo-r220-inkjet-car...

I've used both -R and +R discs, but have gone to using +R's exclusively, simply because of the ability to booktype them to DVD Roms.
Good luck! You're gonna like the Epson! :o)

hi malfnkton,

ok for the paper to use, i would recommend on buying only epson paper because if u use other brand names they will not be as good as the epson paper. i use the epson photo glossy paper which come out very good(just remember to select what kind of paper u r using in settings)

for the verbs, u cant go wrong with either because both are great, however to me the -Rs i think are more compatible in standalone dvd players. +Rs could become just as or more compatible than -Rs if you booktype them, but my burner is not capable of that so thats why i prefer the -Rs.

as for the ink i havent tried any other them epsons but i think i might try the other generic kind anyway if u want to get the epsons then i would suggest u get a pack from costco(40-50$) because if u buy them all seperate u will spend a lot more money.

I found and use glossy cd insert paper that it perforated for the size of a cd case. The cheapest I've found so far is here http://www.prolabel.com/Jewel%20Case%20Inserts.htm
I use a program called mediaface2 from Neato. They are up to mediaface4 now but the #2 version is freeware and can be downloaded at this site http://www.sonicspot.com/mediaface/mediaface.html

Thanks for the links- i have read the article and think i understand what booktyping is. I am not sure that i will ever need to do it as the dvd-r's i am using at the moment seem good enough for me so i am gonna keep on with them for the time being.

Also would like to say ta for the information about what paper is best- i have seen the paper that is already cut for cd inserts in maplins but i was looking to get some that was not in a template form so i can use it for both cd's and dvd's.

Thanks for the warm welcome from you Bigtoxy as well (you guys make me feel warm inside! :) )

Will update you all when printer arrives no doubt in need of some help on actually printing things then!! lol

Over and out

malfnkton- I think you got the right Idea on the Glossy Photo paper ! Get full size & you can do large or multiple photo's ,Cd Covers ,Dvd Covers ect ... If you buy the precut you limit yourself to that format . It's not a neccessity ! but once you start making all those Great looking CD & DVD covers your going to Generate a lot of paper scrap so you may want to invest in a paper shredder ! A inexpensive one should suffice unless you need added features like CD /DVD shredding - credit card shredding ect.. which are nice features though you could get by fine without them ! For trimming your cd & cd covers you can go inexpensive ( Cheap like me LOL!) with a Good pair of scissors ! Or go high style and get a real paper cutter ! I would go with the Fiskars Rotary Type ( Less chance of Missing fingers that way!) Instead of the Office equipment ( Guillotine-kind) I use a scissors but thats me ! They work they're cheap ( relatively anyway !) and are fairly safe ( Unless you run with them ! Don't to that - Seriously ! Whatever you use good luck & happy burning , printing & trimming ! LOL! & Welcome !
