I can burn at 2x or 4x with the Red tops on my 500ax no problem using nero. Did you flash the firmware recently? if so did you remember to disable DMA? you must disable it for the flash to work properly. Once done you can re-enable it again.

Hi I am using 2.0f also. I have tried them all. 1c,1d,1e,1f,2c,2d,2e,2f Using Padus Discjuggler, easycd/dvd, Prassi, Winon, Alcohol, Clad, Instant copy cd/dvd, Dazzle, Ulead DVD Movie factory, Ulead DVD Workshop, Ulead Media Studio, Sonic Reel DVD, Sonic DVD Archetect, Sonic Vegas, and all the different rip/burn proggies out there. The only way I can burn at 4x times is using Nero and changing the settings for Nero in the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder\CheckSupportedMedia

Change the above from 1 to 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder\CheckSupportedMedia

and the above from 1 to 0

You must fire up Nero first then change the above settings. I think the firmware tells it whether your media is "Certified" or not when Nero checks the drive on start up(well thats the only reason I can think of I'm only a novice). When Nero has finnished burning it will reset them to the default "1". So you must do it each time you burn.
If it works for you, then export the 2 keys to your desktop after changing them. Then all you need to do is double click each one when you are ready to burn.
I don't know if it will work for you, but it works EVERYTIME 4x for me. NO ERRORS. If I don't change the 2 settings it will only burn at 2x.

The only time I have ever had coasters was the first time I flashed the firmware. I didn't disable DMA.
After a couple of coasters I re-flashed it the proper way and all was well.
