Well to start off with i would obviously like a ps2 which played DVD-R games. The question is,,, is a ps2 slim up for the job, as I have heard from a few people it might not be! i a willing to try what even needs be? i.e. external hard drive or chipping.

Just get a fat. It has less of a tendancy to overheat because it gets better cooling. Plus, you can use an internal(IDE) hard drive with a DMS4 SE Pro, DMS4 SE Lite with HD Loader 0.8A in ELF form on your Memory Card), or a Matrix Infinity Green Dot with the same thing as with the DMS4 SE Lite. Like that, your laser will only be used for PlayStation games, which are not compatible with HD Loader(only PlayStation 2 games). Just remember to get the Version 7(the SCPH-39xxx) console.

My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

Depends where you look.
http://www.teammodders.com/premodded.php
they would be slightly used but they make sure it is in good running condition. DMS4 Pro SE is the only way to go if you plan on getting a hard drive. And with a V7 it would be no problem, all you need is the network adapter.
Both the older V$ and above, and the newer slimline will play DVD-R
But the older V7 had no problems with lasers, overheating or anything else that the newer models had.
I have a V7 and a V12 so i can make a real good comparison for you.
But since the V12 is the one i had chipped and the hard drive with then that is the one i use. The V7 is getting chipped very soon.

That OR an IDE hard drive with a Network Atatptor. If you have a Network Adapter with an internal hard drive, your laser will only be used for PlayStation games, because currently, only PlayStation 2 games are supported by these hard drive loaders(HD Loader/HD Advance). You can play both backups AND originals with a DMS4 SE Pro and an IDE hard drive with a Network Adapter.

Correct. The firmware that the DMS4 Pro SE runs on will have everything you need. It has a built in HD Loader type program and about 98% of the game will work from the hard drive. there are always a few exceptions.
And don't worry if your questions sound stupid or not, ask them. Too many people jump into modding system before they know what their doing and are real sorry later because they buy the wrong chip, or the wrong type of hard drive (you want an IDE, ATA and not a SATA by the way) Or they get Swap Magic then discover all it's downfalls.
Here is a good page to look at for what the chip will do after it is flashed.
http://www.teamtoxic.com.cn/

The ToxicOS can load games from a disc strait to the hard drive in about 20-30 minutes. Once there you will not use the laser at all when playing them, only when playing from the DVD. YOu will set up the machine so that it boots strait to ToxicOS rather than the standard PS2 screen. That way it goes right tothe part where you can access the hard drive and play and load games . It also have the settings options there, and a play from disc option. You will never have to look at that stupid swirly PS2 logo screen again :)

ok so i have decided to get the PreModded PS2 (slightly used)v7 DMS4 Pro SE!!! costing $220, is that a good price? or can i get it for cheaper?

also i now understand once i get the console all i have to do is buy a IDE hard drive at around 160GB of space, costing around $75.00. and a Network Adapter(which i do not know what is, were to get from and how much it costs) bit i am guesing they just plug into each other

once i have all of that, i then use a program which would, copy a game form my ps2 into the hard drive to play when i like.

I also would like to know if it would be possible if i had a PS2 cd image on my pc (by downloading) could i then plug my now new harddrive back into my pc transfer it over then use it with my ps2?
or can this only be done by first burning the image onto dvd then using the 'program' to transer to my ps2

PS. i would like to thank everyone so far for there help.

You can FTP your games from your computer to your Network Adapter, which in turn sends the data to the hard drive, although I don't know how you do it(since I wasn't around a fat PlayStation 2 much), what you need to do it, or any guides on how to FTP PlayStation 2 ISOs from your computer to your PlayStation 2's hard drive.
