Good news folks. Apparently I don't live in media hell anymore. I discovered my local Walmart is begining to sell Sony DVD-R (TYG03), and Office Max has the Verbs DVD+R MIT (MCC004), which I just bought because they are on sale. Weeeeeeeee!!!!!

Now to my questions. How does MCC004 compare to the YudenT02 I'm so fond of? Also how do they compare to the TYG03 and the YudenT03 (which I hope Walmart will sell soon 'cuz right know they only sell SonyD21)? Finally, how fast do you burn the MCC004? Although write speeds indicate up to 16X, according to Nero 4X is the only burning strategy. My burner is an external Norwood Micro (Benq 1640 rebadge with third party firmware).

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

If your drive is able to bitset, I would recommend using +r media and booktyping them to dvd-rom. I would keep the burn speed of your MCC004's at 8x, 12x tops. Try updating your firmware for new burn strategies for 16x media.

Personally I prefer all 8x rated media over 16x rated media but 8x won't be here forever.

Yeah,it seems that people prefer the 8x over the 16x.Maybe one of the reasons is that they won't burn at 16x so why should pay more to get these 16x discs and to burn them at 8x.So better go with the 8x medias which cost cheaper and can be burned at max.speed of 8x.Another point is that it seems also that some people get better results with the 8x than when burning with 16x,even if these 16x are TY medias.

Updating f/w has been in my mind for quite some time, but in order to do so, I'd need to cross flash my Burner with Benq f/w and hope it all works afterwards. Soon I'm gonna burn a couple of them (4X/8X) to see how do they perform on quality tests. Still, your opinions will be welcomed.

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

well....... I recently bought Lightscribe Verbatims, DVD+R, 16x which code out at MCC004......I usually buy the Taiyo Yuden DVD+R, 8x printables which code YUDEN002 and have also purchased TYG02s. I became discontent with the TYG02s because my poor old burner scanned those burns at 75%...... I guess because I use only YUDEN002s for sooooooo long that it has to become aquantied with the TYGO2s and make better write strategies for that disk. And when my player all of a sudden crapped out on the TYG02s I bought a new player and then a new BenQ 1655 external (that's why I bought the lighscribes). Sooooooo I have to wait to find out if my new burner has better scans with those TYG02s and also try out those MCC004s! It should be the end of this week to the beginning of next before I can test those babies out! Can't wait!

here are my scan for the YUDEN002:

That's a pretty graph. Mine is not as good as yours, but still good. I usually get 98.5 scores because of a few PIF's. About your Benq 1655 external, is it an original external or you just enclosured it?

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

i noticed you mentioned me by name in the title thread, how thoughtful of you~ :) LOL but onto your questions...

IN MY EXPERIENCE, the MCC004 are very good for 16x DVD+R format, i would have to say that the 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s are slightly "better" (i don't have many YUDEN000T03s at this point since i can't get them for a very good price, but have used about 100 so far) :) mind you, firmware plays a very important role here as there are quite a few drives that do not properly recognize the newest 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s by Taiyo Yuden...

i PERSONALLY don't like the TYG03s that much, that's why they are not in my sig...i've had MUCH more success with the 8x rated media in the past (ie. TYG02s and even the 4x DVD-R TYG01s), but since 16x rated media is becoming more and more readily available locally, if you INSIST on using 16x DVD-R media, then the TYG03s are your "best bet" (i like the MIT Verbatim 16x DVD-R MCC03RG20 even LESS than the TYG03s, but that's just MY opinion of them) :)

i think my buddy Mort81 covered it pretty well in that i too would recommend you burning @8x for the MCC004s, that's just the speed i have become comfortable with 16x rated medias, regardless of format~ :) but once again, firmware is VERY important here, if you can manage cross-flashing your drive to a Benq 1640, i would suggest you updating to their newest firmware revision, BSRB, which was released recently late last month~ 6/28/06

http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DVDRW/DW1640/BSRB.zip

after a few pieces, assuming you have QSuite v2.1 utility setup after you cross-flash and SOLIDBURN enabled, once your drive "learns" the MCC004s, i would even say try a few at higher burn speeds (ie. 12x and 16x) as i know a few Benq "hardcore users" get very good results burning FASTER on Benq drives~ :) i personally get decent scores when burning @12x or @16x, but @8x seems to be the "sweet spot" for ME at this point in time, i also have a Benq 1640 drive with the above mentioned firmware~ :)

lastly, for 4x being the only burning speed available to you in Nero, this is most likely due to the firmware you currently have in your Norwood Micro burner, it might be something to really consider cross-flashing to a Benq 1640 if that is in fact what it is a rebadge of...good luck :) hope that little morsel of info gets you going in the right direction...

Thanks for answering Doc!!! Cross-flashing has been in my mind for quite some time. I know I have a Benq because I did an extensive research on CDFreaks.com about the drive. Also I can acces the Solid Burn features via ImgBurn. So that's the key element. I'm gonna try the link.
