I've read stuff on afterdawn and doom9 continuously, but i still cannot find exactly what i need. my goal is to: put my 75+ dvd collection on an external hard drive before i go to school in the fall before they become scratched beyond recognition. I have several dvd progs: shrink, decryptor, gordian knot packs, XviD, ratDVD, imgburn, dvdfab decrypt, but I need to streamline the process, because I don't have alot of time to configure more technical stuff. I know there is a simple way to do it, but I don't know it yet. I read a post here somewhere about a guy who kept about 40 movies on an external 40GB HD. I was thinking of getting a 150GB Ext HD or so. I know I'll have to compress using something, but I don't know how to do it. This weekend I used decryptor to make an ISO on my internal HD and WinRAR to compress it, but it didn't work the way I wanted. Any other Ideas? Shrink rarely works on my movies, due to lack of updates, but it will work on some of them, however I fear that it will not compress enough. Can someone explain what kind of compression I'd need and the SIMPLEST, free-based way to compress my library to an external HD?

Ypu're still gonna need shrink to do this. To get Shrink to work for you, I suggest RipIt4Me.

ok i have ripit4me, but i thought shrink was kinda useless for more modern movies with harder encryptions. does ripit4me help with that? I thought shrink only compresses to about 5GB or so? I'll never get all of my movies to fit if they're that large.

Hello.
To leave them in DVD form you'll need ratDVD. You'll also need to use AnyDVD in the background while ripping with DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter or rip with DVDFab Decrypter. Since AnyDVD has a free trial, I'd use that.
http://www.slysoft.com
Use DVD Decrypter if you're using AnyDVD. Otherwise rip with DVDFab Decrypter and then process through FixVTS if Shrink errors when processing the files.
ratDVD guide: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd_to_ratdvd.cfm
This is a time consuming task however.
If you want perfect copies of the DVDs, you'll need a lot more disk space than 150GB. :)
Why don't you just make backup copies of the DVDs and put the originals in a safe place. You probably only need the main movie on the backups which will be the disk used.
If you want to make the backups with free software, you can just use ripit4me which uses DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and FixVTS.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/360110#2132519
So here are the options as I see them.
Option 1: Rip each DVD as an ISO image file to the hard disk. This will require a lot of hard drive space, probably around 600GB. You will have perfect copies on the other hand. You will need to use AnyDVD to overcome structural copy protection and DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to an ISO on the hard disk.
Option 2: Use ratDVD to compress the ripped and decrypted DVDs to the hard drive. This takes ups less space than uncompressed DVD files but at the cost of somewhat reduced video quality and requires a lot of time to perform. To do this, the DVDs must be ripped to decrypt them and then ratDVD used to do the compression to the hard drive where they are stored. You will need AnyDVD running in the background when ripping.
Option 3: Make backup copies of the DVDs using DL media. You will have an exact copy of the DVD. At $2 per disk, it won't come cheap. Making the copy will take about 40 minutes each assuming you have a burner that will burn DL media. Verbatim +RDL is the only media to use and your burner must be capable of booktyping the media as DVD-ROM. AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter will suffice.
Option 4: Make backup copies of the DVDs using single layer media. There will be reduced video quality due to the compression required. AnyDVD, DVD Srink, and DVD Decrypter will do this task as well as ripit4me. It'll take about 40 minutes per DVD on average burning at 4X.
Option 5: Make backup copies of the main movie only using single layer media. There will be either no or somewhat reduced video quality depending on the size of the movie. AnyDVD, DVD Srink, and DVD Decrypter will do this task as well as ripit4me. It'll probably take about 25 minutes per DVD on average depending on your system.
Think the options over and then repost back and I or any number of other people can provide further help.

ripit4me uses PSL files with DVD Decrypter to overcome the newer protections.

ok, so i'm testing out ratDVD with an ISO file of American Pie I put on here sunday. I set the ratDVD quality control to 90 for a smaller file (just for testing purposes). Since it's "highly compressed" I was wondering if I could use that FFDShow program to decompress and play it? It says it is a "super-fast decompression tool" Anyone with experience? Roughly what should I set the ratDVD quality control thing on to keep them small enough to get as many movies as possible onto a 150-300gb disk? Quality isn't a huge deal, but i would still like to be able to recognize what movie it is, lol!

well........ why don't you just convert your DVD files to AVI format.... which is always smaller and maybe you can get it to work that way onto a 150Gig external hard drive. Still time consuming.... you should have started this project a while ago instead of drinking all those beers on summer break!~ LOL ;-D just kiddin ya!

ok, ratDVD finally finished american pie yesterday, late afternoon. It compressed the movie down to 693MB, but I think I'll change the quality control up some more to get it to compress to just roughly 1GB. I could definitely notice the quality difference, but it would only play as a Windows Media Player file. Is this normal? I have two ok dvd players (PowerDVD and InterActual Player - I know, not that great). Should I use that FFDShow program to watch the movie on?
Edit: also, someone mentioned using ripit4me WITH decrypter, but it also uses two other programs. Do I need them or not if I'm only using decrypter for making ISOs? This is the current way I have it configured:
1) Decrypter - ISOs to HD
2) ratDVD - compressing to splash folder
3) Media Player - watching DVD
I would like to be able to keep it this way, but able to use another program, preferably one specifically for dvds, to watch the finished product. Most of my movies are semi-modern so I would probably need to use ripit4me, but I'm confused about how to make it work ONLY with decrypter and not with the other voice and audio stuff??!!
Oh Yeah!: Decryptor -> AnyDVD -> ratDVD -> Whatever
Does AnyDVD have regular updates? I'm assuming it does.

Hello.
The only reason I suggested ripit4me was because it somewhat automates the process and overcomes structural copy protection. If you have any disks that have strong structural copy protection like puppetlock, ripguard, and arccos, then DVD Decrypter will probably fail in decrypting. That's also why AnyDVD was suggested as well since it overcomes all forms of copy protection. If you con't have any disks with strong copy protection, DVD Decrypter will suffice by itself.
If you have disks that have strong copy protection, you can either download and use AnyDVD in the background while ripping with DVD Decrypter or use ripit4me which uses DVD Decrypter along with PSL files to overcome strong protection. You will need FixVTS (free) which ripit4me uses to clean up ripped files.
Are you just keeping the main movies on the HDD?
They playback with WMP or Player Classic or any other media player that recognized the rat format.

ok, i have all the ripit4me stuff so i guess i'll just use that! I have it installed, but i don't have much experience using it. Let me get this straight:
1) Start rip to ISO folder? - decryptor or ripit4me?
2) ripit4me fills in problems. do i have to open anything new?
3) ratDVD ISO to splash folder
that sound about right?
i am planning on adding some more modern movies to my library soon, would you recommend just using AnyDVD or is ripit4me just as functional? Can i buy AnyDVD at wal-mart? what price? thanks

Hello.
AnyDVD can only be acquired online at http://www.slysoft.com. It currenly costs $39US but through the end of the month there is a $5 discount with the code word: birthday. It has a free 21-day trial that is fully functional.
The ripit4me approach is free of course.

RipIt4Me will only rip in file mode, not iso in 1click mode. This is because it is the structure of the file that will need to be cleaned up from any blank or unreferenced cells in the file. You must then either convert to iso through Shrink or as suggested AnyDVD will work behind Shrink and you can output as iso. AnyDVD can only be purchased online from http://www.slysoft.com There is a 21 day free trial of the program. After that you can purchase if you want. Right now there is a discount on the program and it will last for another few days.

Here is how to set it up so AnyDVD and DVDD work together with no conflicts:
Start DVD Decrypter goto Tools - Settings
I/O Tab - Click on Elby CDIO-Elaborate Bytes
General Tab - un-check Check For Structure Protection

does anyone know if I can play the ratDVD files with a program other than Windows Media Player? Maybe powerDVD or InterActual Player? I tried it but it didn't do anything. Is it a setting on ratDVD?

The player has to recognize the rat format. WMP and Media Player Classic will both play the files. Most software DVD players will not because they play mpeg (DVD) video files. Media players usually play all sorts of video formats: omg, AVI, DivX, XviD, wmv, etc. I do not have a list of what players can play rat files. I'd say if you try a player and it doesn't recognize and play the file, it probably won't.

I use Nero Recode 2 and make mp4 copies of all my movies. I adjust the file size to around a gig. I also just got a stand alone which is Nero certified and will playback my rips...I can fit roughly 4 movies per DVD this way. Quality suffers a bit. I aslo just re-read your post and I am an idiot...you were looking for a free simple solution. Nero Recode is part of the bought package...sorry.

Ok, I tested out ripping American Pie2 this morning with these results:
1) Open Ripit4me to add the PSL to DVD Decrypter
2) I forgot that I deleted shrink, so that caused ripit4meto stop, but decryptor still decrypted IFOs and VOBs into a splash folder
3) I am currently compressing with ratDVD. I never ended up using the fixVTS and shrink parts of ripit4me, because I don't need shrink. I'm wondering if it's only working because the encryption on American Pie2 isn't very new. Would it be worth it to go ahead and use shrink and fixvts? then ratDVD? or will it only compress once?
