Using 16X discs in Recorder

I have just purchased my first DVD Recorder(Panasonic DMR-EX85). While perusing the net I came across the assertion that using 16X discs in machines that can only write at 8X can damage the drive. Is there any truth to this. I have used plenty of 16X discs in my 8X plextor DVD burner on my PC without issue. Are the drives in the dvd recorders really that different.

some drives will take the upgraded disks and others will have problems with it...... if yours is fine, then ok. but I would check to see if there is a firmware update for your drive. If there is then you should update the firmware.

Firmware for your burner as that sets new write strategies for new media thats out..

Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. Every company has its own methods to allow you to do a firmware upgrade. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. To find you firmware go to your burner homepage and find the firmware for you make and model.

this will allow you to burn All the 16x disks you want..... not just the brand you are doing now. And it might even improve your drive.

I don't even see your dvd recorder listed in the firmware page
