Hi,
Can anyone recommend one or maybe two good video converting programs to DVD.
The files I would be converting are DivX
AVI and Mpegs - (VCD & SVCD) for which at present I`m using at least 3 different software applications.
I need one or two "All-rounders".
I`ve been using "Super" from eRightsoft which seems to work fine (is also free), but I would like to try out some alternatives.

If you are going to put on DVD it has to be in MPEG2 format. DVD players only play this format, they don't play AVI formats (although a few companies are starting to make players for AVI).
Convert DivX/Xvid to MPEG2 (I use TMPGEnc-very good). Then import into an Authoring program. (MPEG2 or VOB has to be demuxed into mpv (video) and AC3 (audio) streams for these programs). DVDLab will Demux for you. DVDLab is excellent, so is TMPGEnc Author which is a little faster and a little less complicated. I haven't found any others that work well.

Hi cool9,
Thanx for the tips - I`ll try them out and get back.
What`s the difference between MPEG2 (SVCD) and MPEG2 (DVD)?
I use "AVIcodec" to tell me what kind of file I`m dealing with and when he says MPEG2=SVCD/DVD, it doesn`t necessarily mean it`s a DVD, which I find easier to hanle at present.

Hi
I have used TMPGEnc in the past but have found it takes way too long with conversions. I now use WinAVI and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it- very quick, good quality conversions with the ability to resize and crop.

as collarme said winavi is brilliant, few clicks and ur video is converting, no hassle. It is very user friendly and does exactly what it says on the tin, defintaly recommend it =]

Here is another much used program that will take you from downloaded file to dvd and is highly reccomended on this forum. I used a previous version and was impressed with its speed, quality and ease of use. The trial inserts a watermark and is speed limited:http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/vso_convertxtodvd_guide.cfm Not sure about your mpeg's, though.

Hi mistycat!
I´ve downloaded VSO software as you suggested and it seems to work fine.
First results are very positive;
it said it would take an hour to convert so I went out for a beer
and when I got back I saw an old familiar sight:
"AUDIO_TS / Video_TS". Great !
So far so good. I`m beginning to enjoy this.

I would go with TMPGEnc.You can import an AVI and in the 'Source Range' , select a small portion of the video (where the actors are talking in close-up) and process that to an mpeg.Check the sync and if it's out, re-start TMPGEnc and this time put in an adjustment (in the Source Range) and re-check.This can be done in a few minutes and saves all kinds of heartache.
I find convertions from PAL to NTSC often result in an audio/video sync problem.
