I keep getting the error "cannot format disc-unsupported medium speed". The writer uses 2.0 and 2.4. The media is Sony DVD+R 1x-16x. This is my first external drive, am I missing something obvious? I installed it properly and updated drivers. Please help.

Not sure what you are saying by the 2.0 and 2.4. You are using a DVD5 single layer medium write once media not rewritable, is the firmware on this burner up to date?

What is the model of this burner, what is the current firmware and what media have you tried? RW media is written at 2 or 2.4x you say you are using Sony 16x have you tried writing at a higher speed?

It is a dr-dvdrw248eu1, so far I have used maxell DVD+R 1x-4x, sony DVD+R 1x-16x and some tdk type. I made sure I burned at 2.4x but still got error. I don't know too much about firmware, but I went into the drives options and clicked on update firmware. maybe I'll try rw media next.

the problem with I/O Magic drives is that they are outsourced you do not know who the mfr of the drive is, it could be BTC, BenQ or Phillips. It probably does not like the Sony 16x media, try going back to some 8x media. Also, if this burner will do 4x write then set it at that speed and see if it will do it. Trying to burn at too low a speed is just as bad as too high.
