I have been burning 16x verbs at 4x for what i thought was the best quality (the slower the better) but now I am finding that this may not be true? will the picture actually look worse if I burn at 4x instead of 8x (half the rated speed)?

im not to sure if it will look worse, i would suggest to burn at a slow speed if using media that is not good, however for the high quality media like those verbs, i think they are meant 2 be burned at the higher speeds,

i also have some verbs 16x and i have burned them at 8x and 16x and could not tell any difference in the quality.

also a good rule for burning speeds is 2 burn at half of what it is rated at, however , like i said before if u use high quality like Verbs, TYs, u can burn at the high speeds, u just have to try them out to see the results

Yes, as a rule you should burn half the rated speed of the disks, although it really depends on your setup. Some people and even me once got to use a benq dw1655 dvd burner that burned better at the rated speed of the disks although in most cases that is not reccommended. Also you should make sure your drives firmware is up to date for that 16x media, it will work a lot better with newer firmware. you can find that at http://www.rpc1.org Hopr that answered your question.

There will be no difference in the actual video quality per say but with good quality media such as those verbatims or ty's you will probably find that burning at under 8x will produce more PIE and PIF errors making the backup more succeptable to playback problems (pausiing, skipping, pixelation, etc).

As long as there are no playback problems, you will not notice any difference in video quality between one burned at 2x (2.4x for DVD+R) and 16x. Most are achieving the fewest PIE and PIF errors burning quality 16x rated media at 8x and 12x.

If you don't experience any playback problems and the errors are within reason, you might as well burn as fast as your setup will allow. As a rule of thumb 8x or 12x is a good speed to burn 16x rated media and 8x is good for quality 8x rated media. The only time it is recommended to burn at 4x or less anymore is when using poor quality media in which case you're most likely going to experience playback problems later anyway.

whats weird is I havent seen any of these issues? Is it because I use both deep analysis and the default sharp setting for AEC settings in Shrink? So basically i can burn at 8X with 16x with no problem with the verbs anyway

Now you're mixing apples with oranges. Amount of compression and software being used will affect video quality. Burn speed can cause playback issues (pausing, skipping, pixelating, etc) but shouldn't affect video quality. Excessive compression can also cause some playback issues.

You shouldn't have any problems burning those verbs at 8x. If you run into playback problems slow back down to 4x. Make sure your firmware is up to date. If your drive is compatable, scan some discs burned at different speeds with Nero disc quality scan and compare the results.
