Okay. I have a V14 slimline PS2 with a DMS4 modchip, and I recently decided I'd like to play games off the HD. From what I can tell by googling, I would need to spend a small fortune, not only on an IDE HD itself, but also on an HD Combo or Connect device, both of which require soldering skills to install - oh, and which are only compatible with V12 or V13, anyway. *rolls eyes*

Failing that, my other option would appear to be USBExtreme/Advance, both of which sound utter crap.

I guess my question is this: is there ANY way I can use the ToxicOS to boot games off the HD with a V14 PS2? Preferably which doesn't require soldering (I can't solder), or cost the price of a brand new PS2? Thanks. Please answer, if you know anything about the subject - finding info from Google is like extracting blood from a stone, only the latter is easier.

USB Advance/Extreme does blow, and no, there's no solution for playing games with a v.14 off an IDE HD that I know of. I'm not 100% on that, I'll check on it later and get back to you. The best way to prolong the life of your laser is to use quality media like 8x Taiyo Yuden's or Verbatim's. I have a v.4 that's six years old with the original laser, been modded for almost a year and shows no signs of slowing down.

Thanks for the reply - I suspected there was probably no solution, but I wanted to make absolutely sure :-/

As for media, I use Verbatim. I made sure to use the best quality discs I could find, because I put some heavy wear and tear on my PS2 at times, if I'm recording and need to reset a lot. Anyway, I'll check back later to see if you've found anything - cheers!

I talked to Davbere Joch. He does most of teammodders.com mods, and he says there's no way currently to play games off an IDE HD with the v.14, the solder points have been removed. The USB is doable, but it's slow and sucks, like you said, best to wait or buy a premodded v.12 or 13 if you really want to play games off the HD with a slim. Sorry, know that's not wanted you wanted to hear, but at least you can think about other options.

>_<. I'll stick with my V14 for the foreseeable future - I don't fancy the USB route, and buying another PS2, as well as an IDE HD, is just more money than I'm prepared to pay.

Anyway, thanks massively for that - you have been really helpful.

It's understandable, PS2's don't grow on trees lol. I have no money, so I empathize. The USB route is definitely not worthwhile, very slow transfers and massive compatibility issues. For now, you'll just have to be content with playing games off disc. If it's any consolation, playing games off the HD for the PS2 isn't a picnic. To transfer games with Winhiip, you have to remove your PS2 from the expansion bay, and hook it up to your PC through the network adapter, set it as a slave drive and transfer games. Just saving a game to disc through HD Advance takes about an hour. Compare that to say 10-15 mins for the Xbox. Winhiip is fast, but a fair amount of work to transfer games. Don't get me wrong, playing games off the HD is cool, but there's a lot more problems with the PS2 that other systems. Personally I just use my Xbox to play games off the HD, much better suited for the task.
