Anybody else having to always defrag?

I've been backing up a lot of discs lately. I use DVDdecrypter to rip and DVD2one to compress. I have a 20 GB drive that I only use for the DVD backup process.
The one thing I find is every few discs (usually about 10) the system completely freezes. I mean hard drive goes "click," mouse won't move, <CRTL-ALT-DEL> won't do anything. (using Windows 2000)
Now, once I re-boot, I run checkdisc (it's fine) then degrag (usually needs it badly.)
So I figure either I have a bad drive, or this is part of the DVD2one process. Anybody else have to defrag this much?
BTW- it only ever crashes while using DVD2one; never DVDdecrypter and never when I'm burning.

I find that after using dvd2one that my system slows down unacceptably.I always restart after each time i use dvd2one to refresh my system, this maybe why i dont have to defrag.Hope this helps

I haven't de-fragged in ... well since WinXP Pro got put on - 8 months ago or so.
Sometimes I have 5-8 Gb of free HDD space missing after deleting VOB BUP IFO files , Norton Protected Recycle Bin is purged and all the space comes back.
I do the same as p1tch , I do a restart after DVD2One has done it's thing and all is cool.

Thanks for your experiences, guys. Looks like the hard drive is bad. All weekend I used my primary hard drive and had no problems whatsoever.

If you have Norton Systemworks the in Norton Utilities there is Norton Disk Doctor , this may give you some extra info after a full diagnostic check.
It may take quite some time to complete it's work , the only time I had a bad drive Norton Disk Doctor kept trippin out & wouldnt even let me run a Disk Doctor check...so the drive went back

There is an underlying problem here that we aren't addressing:
DVD2One shouldnt be causing computers to slow down after the program has been completed. I haven't experienced it personally, but get on to the creators about it and ask they're experts about it. They may even have an FAQ database with this answered!

I know why my PC needs a restart after DVD2One and it duly gets it : )

Haven't had that problem. Try downloading the latest dvd2one program (it does full discs, with menus). Also try perfectdisk for defraging. Works better then windows if you have windows 2000 or XP. You can find info here --> http://www.raxco.com/products/perfectdisk2k/

When you say will do full disk, do you mean it will back-up a DVD-9 on to two seperate disks and if so is that update available to download from their site?

No FULL-DISK just means all of the DVD is compressed , menu & extras aswell.
Okay for doing 'episode' discs...
Futurama Season 2 came out brilliantly
