magic chip issue?

hi there,1st of all im an xbox guy(chip em,led etc) so know very little of the ps2's.
bought a ready chipped ps2(round about V5 i think) of ebay with disc reading problems.
bunged in a new laser but still have problems
think its an old magic chip fitted
IIRC you do a short power on for ps2 discs and long for PS1.
now it plays back ups fine but wont touch original ps2 discs nor original dvd movies.
played around with the laser height as well but couldnt improve it.

is this just down to the poor(by reading on the forum)magic chip?

no, the problem is not the mod. If it's a magic chip you should be able to turn it off by holding the reset button when turning the ps2 on and testing the originals that way (put in the original, put the ps2 in standby mode, then press and hold the reset button until you see the screen with the blue clouds/spheres spinning).

right done a bit of testing
i have a demo game on a blue ps2 disc:plays with short or long button hold
i have the network adapter set up disc(silver)machine trys to read it but in the end says insert PS2 disc
it tries to read retail DVD movies but again doesnt regardless of button holding
i have a PS2 game copied onto DVD-R which plays regardless off short/long push

well im thinking its a drive issue as ive got the network adapter installed and an old xbox HD.
plays games flawlessly of the HD though it can flag up errors ripping them.
so its got a new laser,i lubed the running gear and tryed adjusting the height of the laser following a tut' i found online.
anyone got any other thoughts?
