Hi, my sons playstation has been chipped for 3 or 4 years now, but he recently knocked it and it now won't play backups. It still plays originals but no backups.

Is the chip likely to be knackered, my mate at work had a look at it as he thought the solder may have come away but he says it seems OK.

Oh and by the way, when he put it back together it wouldn't play anything. Is he likely to have just got a lead or two mixed up?

Many thanks

JaZZ

sounds like the laser is knocked out of alignment the first time... have a look here for adjusting the laser: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1

when you say it wouldn't play anything, i assume the PS2 still powers up and goes to the browser screen fine?

Yeah thats right, it just sits at the browser screen.

I'll check the laser alignment link you gave me, thanks

But why would it play original games and not backups if the laser was out of line?

Cheers

backups are harder to read, so if the laser is knocked slightly out the backups may have become so hard to read the PS2 just gives up, whereas the originals can be read with some effort... i'd say if you can't fix it after adjusting the laser using the link above, you'll have to get a new laser installed

I see, have you ever carried out the repair yourself following the advice in the link?

have done it a couple of times, the method works, but it does require a lot of time and patience
