hello, I have recently got my version 3 playstation 2 installed with a matrix infinity green dot chip. My problem rests with the fact that my playstation 2 is a fussy git....
My console plays ps2 back ups fine along with ps1 originals both PAL and NTSC. However, when it comes to playing ps1 back ups I have some real trouble...
I have burned the game using Alcohol 120 at the lowest speed using only verbatim CD-Rs however, given this, the game only loads to the ps1 logo screen and doesn't go any further. The cd Drive just hums and whirls at me before stopping....
I have tried cleaning the inside and adjusting the Cog as suggested but to no avail. Can anyone give me any suggestions to deal with this problem?
I have never had any problems with old faithful here apart from now....
thank you very much

not ssure if this will work but surely worth the 5 seconds it will take to try it.

Forcing PS1/DVD mode:
Press the circle from Joypad 1.
(We placed this option just in case someone need to force the PS2 to boot in PS1/DVD mode).

It could just be the discs you used as well.

yeah i tried that, no Joy i'm afraid. I used traxdata cd-r and verbatim cd-r. What other cds do you suggest? Moreover, what other advice can you give? thank you very much for your time.

really not sure, i use Sony myself but rarely do any CD games.
But you have a top notch chip and the Verbatim are good media too
try burning at 16x or 24X, somewhere in the middle range. That is where i burned the few i did and they all worked fine.
I just have very little knowledge on why CD games would not work due to my limited use of them and the fact that i have not had one that did not work.
have you looked on the net for firmware updates for your burner, that can sometimes help too
I would try the speeds first, then the firmware if that doesn't work.

What games are you trying to boot? I have an MI in my v.4 and it doesn't have any issues with PSX backups. Burning at 1/4 the speed of the disc is a good place to start.

I am (failing) to play back ups of Suikoden 2, Breath of fire 4 and Lunar silver star story. However, given this, the originals of these games work fine. I really don't think my lazer is dying because in game movies never skip on my ps2 back ups or the ps1 originals, The only issue is that it does not boot ps1 back ups and I cannot for the life of me think why.
Thank you for any responses.

First off, good taste in games, I'm very much a RPG enthusiast myself, those are all terrific games and part of my collection. Breath of Fire IV (some versions) is mod protected. You could try turning the PSX screen fix off in the firmware menu. Hit triangle+circle at bootup to access the firmware menu. This has caused me problems a couple times with PS2 games. Also make sure PSX multi disc is enabled, and quick boot is off. Hit start to save your settings and hit reset. Also make sure your chip's firmware is up to date, v1.88 is the most recent firmware.

http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=news

Not all versions of Breath of Fire IV are mod protected. I was fortunate and found a copy that wasn't. Usually when it's mod protected, it'll boot to a screen with a circle and a red slash through some Japanese writing. Try adjusting the settings I mentioned, if they don't work, perhaps it's media related or BOFIV is mod protected.

Is your firmware up to date? What speeds have you tried burning at? I burn CD's at 12x on 48x CD-R's. When I catch up on my posts today, I'm going to give each of these a games a trial run in my PS2, it's been awhile since I've played any of them.

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatibility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Edit: Update 8/01

I did some testing last night on Lunar, Breath of Fire IV, and Suikoden 2. Suikoden 2 went off without a hitch. Same can't be said for Lunar and BOF IV. On Matrix Infinity Firmware 1.88, I couldn't get it to load at all. So I downgraded to FW v1.82 on a hunch. I got BOFIV to boot about 40% of the time, disc 2 of Lunar wouldn't boot at all. Disc #1 booted fine. I made two copies of BOFIV, both burned at 12x on Sony CD-R's, nada. Then I tried playing it on PCSXbox, and it worked fine. So that left two out of three games not working on an acceptable level.

Tonight I did a ton of testing. I picked out seven backups, and tested them out. I tested them on MI Firmware revision 1.88. I booted each of them 5 times. Here are the results:

PSX Boot Record

Persona Successful boots 5/5

Mega Man Legends Successful boots 5/5

Soul Reaver Successful boots 5/5

Tenchu 2 Successful boots 5/5

Saga Frontier 2 Successful boots 5/5

Lunar 2 Disc #1 Successful boots 5/5

Multi-disc: 2/2

Final Fantasy VII Disc #1 Successful boots 5/5

Multi-disc: 2/2

The reason I tested this so thoroughly was two fold. One, I wanted to make sure it wasn't my laser. Two, I wanted to be sure this wasn't somehow related to the latest MI Firmware update. 35/35 successful boots is good enough for me. Once, one of the games went back to the browser from the PSX boot screen. I clicked on it in the browser and it booted, I didn't count that as a boot failure. My parameters for boot failures were RSOD or a freeze upon boot. I got neither of those. By multi disc, I mean testing out a point on the disc where you have to switch in midgame. I.E. I put in Disc #2 of Lunar, and started a new game. That forces you to switch to disc #1 on the fly. I did that twice with Lunar and FFVII, and it worked perfect each time. So the conclusions are overwhelmingly in the favor of bad disc images. If you get your images from emuparadise.org, be forewarned, they have a ton of crappy PSX isos. BitTorrent is the best way. Maybe we even got the same rips of a couple of those games, could explain why we have issues with the same chip and the same games.

you have been really helpful thank you very much for your time. Now that you said that bof 4 and lunar didn't work i feel a lot more confident my machine is not defective. Later this evening i shall rip chrono cross and give that a whirl to see if that works. I shall keep you posted.
Tell me, have you played Grandia 3 yet and if you have what is it like?

Yeah not wanting to be beaten, I even found some Taiyo Yuden CD's at wal-mart (under the Maxell brand) only to find my PS2 doesn't like them. I tried those with Lunar, and a couple games which work fine, and my PS2 spits em out like CMC Mag. Ironcially, my PS2 reads Memorex CD-R's fine, go figure. Anyway, I'm almost certain it's the iso, and a compatibility issue with the MI. There's rare things like this, Legend of Mana (the downloaded rip at least) doesn't work on PS2 with Breaker Pro, but will with a modchip. The widespread Wild Arms rip freezes when starting a new game with Breaker Pro on PS2, but works with a modchip. Both those and Lunar work on emulator, PCSXbox handles Lunar pretty well, minus some audio skips during cut scenes. So the iso works. If you have a modded Xbox, you can play it, or you could play it on PC emulator. ePSXe and PSXeven are the PSX emus I've had the most success with. Anyway the last thing I'll try is downgrading my firmware again and trying Lunar a little more thoroughly, though I'm almost certain it won't work. I haven't played much of Grandia III. I played my copy just to make sure it works. The visuals are very impressive, but I've read the game is like 30-40 hours tops. Kinda one of those things- good while it lasts.

Aye i tried lunar on the my psx emulator and it worked fine. it seems like the title of this thread summed it up perfectly, my ps2 is simply fussy....
However, I tried tales of destiny burnt with alchol 120 last night and that worked fine....(well about 60 percent of the time). My copy of suikoden 2 does not work well at all (it boots up very really) but I think thats because its an NRG image. I played it in my psx emulator and it just jumps and skips all over the intro movie. I think its time to get a different type of image me thinks...

I just use Alcohol 120% to backup PSX games. It's easy to use and supports bin/cue, nrg, ccd, mdf, iso, pretty much any type of file you can think of, very easy to use to burn CD games. Lunar is definitely goofy, I've pretty much tried everything except downgrading my firmware and endlessly playing with settings. I tried rebuilding it (which doesn't work for PSX games btw), burning it with Nero, Alcohol 120%, Memorex, Taiyo Yuden, and Sony Media, nothing. When I tried extracting the files with IsoBuster, two files were errant, so that could be it, though Apache 3 extracted them fine. It's either a crappy image, compatibility issue with the MI, or both.

I have a question, I have matrix infinity chip and my ps2 is a slim version 14, but for some reason I can't get the psx backup to work. The ps1 game I am trying to work is Super Street Fighter Puzzle Turbo II and Super Bust a Move. It actually works slightly, the capcom screen for SSFPT II will flash by and then it will completely freeze. Super Bust a Move will not post at all. The mod chip has the latest bios revision v1.88. I have a basket of cd-rs in the trash. I am using Taiyo Yuden cd-r to burn these games.

I am also going to test other games, Xenogears, Final Fantasy Chronicles, Final Fantasy Anthology, Final Fantasy Orgins. Hopefully these games work....Rpg junkie at heart...

Dunno, I've noticed a couple people having issues with PSX backups on FW 1.88. I have no proof, but I think it's somehow related to the current firmware. Mainly because I swear Lunar worked on my PS2 when I first got it modded, and I know Breath of Fire 4 did. I haven't tried Xenogears or any of those others of late. FF Chronciles is just FF4 and Chrono Trigger, which you can get on emulator, though SNES Station seems to suck like all PS2 homebrew. I don't bother with the PS2 for emulation, I use my Xbox for that. I found my PS2 doesn't like Taiyo Yuden CD-R's at all, got coasters, from games which work fine on Memorex. Most of my Memorex are made by Ritek/Sony, so actually not that bad. Just make sure your firmware is up to date, you burn at 1/4 the max speed of the disc, and shut down everything while you burn. Maybe try another brand of CD-R's. I wasted like 10 discs on Lunar, mainly being stubborn, if you get coaster after coaster with another brand of CD-R, just cut your losses and move on.

I am inclined to agree, it may be a problem with the firmware. I suppose the one great thing about having a ps2 fitted with a Matrix is the fact that the current firmware can be changed. So by that logic some of the problems people may be experiencing may not be lasting ones as better functioning firmware may arrive which could solve the dilema. It could be worse I suppose, the old precoded chips ps2's were fitted with back in the day couldn't be changed at all in the manner a matrix chip could.

PS. does anyone know if a firmware update is due?

I got final fantasy orgins, chronicles and anthology to boot up and it works great. I guess the two images I got for super puzzle fighter turbo and super bust a move must be bad sectors because I couldn't fully extract them with cdgen, to recreate the file onto dvd, I encounter some errors extracting.

I had that happen when trying to use IsoBuster to extract Lunar. I don't believe you can put PSX games on DVD anyway. I extracted Lunar with Apache 3, patched it with DVDScanLite, and it didn't work when I burned a UDF/ISO DVD. No guarantee it won't work for other games, but I wouldn't go hog wild on burning PSX games to DVD, I believe they have LBA checks which prevent that from working. I'm not 100% on that.
