I have been using Taiyo Yuden White Inkjet Hub Printable 4X DVD-R with great success as of late. However, I can't get these anymore (or at least, as easily as I'd like [e.g. Supermediastore & Meritline discontinued them]).
The question I have for you, kind responders, is will different speeds discs (8x, 16x, etc) be as reliable, or more, as the 4x's? I own a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108 drive.
Also, I notice the Taiyo Yudens scratch much easier than a DVD movie I own. Is this because of the quality (or lack thereof) of these? I never get coasters out of them, but can you possibly suggest an even better quality DVD-R comparable to the DVDs purchased in stores? My first concern is not making coasters.
I am always leary of getting new media... thus the n00b question.
The TY 8X is excellent media as well. The TY 16X falls short because of lack of firmware support on some drives currently. TY media is second to none! However, depending on your drive, Verbatim might be the best choice in 16X...
teflonmyk thanks for the response. The drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108 drive, but I've never used it beyond the 4x speed. So, you think the 8x Taiyo Yuden's will suffice?
It is felt by many that high burn speeds cause problems, especially in DVD-Video standalone playability. Although I personally have not had problems, consider that before looking into 16x media or using high burn speeds. I only burn customer's videos at 4x speed just to be safe regardless of the media used.
I've used only TYG02 (8x TY DVD-R) with good results, though I can't comment on the 4x stuff. I think you'd be okay with either.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
As the results were equal best for quality and longevity of scores in Nero scans (equal with Maxell R03[Ritek] strangely enough).
So you should attain as good results stepping up from x4 to x8, as others have said x16 have not been as reliable, certainly not as good in my experience.
