PS2 won't read controller for certain games on HD?

I noticed that whenever I try to load Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires from my HD, the PS2 wont read the controller so I can't even get out of the opening sequence and demos. It reads it for my other games(SOTC, Initial D, Katamari, etc). It also wouldn't read when I tried playing my friends legit copy of The Bouncer. It's not a offical PS2 controller if that helps.

try an official ps2 controller
then make sure its dual.shock.2 not by whats on the case
by whats on the chip inside

I agree with Retro_rc, if you are not using an official controller, then try with an official controller, not all third party controllers work on all ps2 games.
