Hello, I recently put a harddrive into my PS2 and have been playing games off of it using Swap Magic 3.6 and HD Loader. The other day I acquired brand new unopened FFXI and the expansion Chains of Promatha for the PS2. First I tried just putting in the first disc (which would be the Play Online Viewer, it is manditory to install it before the actual game 11). But it tells me that I don't have a harddrive installed. So I tried starting HD Loader, saving the ISO and booting it from the harddrive. As soon as I boot the POL game I get a black screen and it stays there. There are some different configuration settings in HD Loader (3x3 combination I believe) but i'm not sure which one would work if any. Today I have gotten the official HDD Utility Disc version 1.10 (this is the disc used to format the Sony Hard drive that comes in that $100 bundle package) I thought maybe it would format my drive into that of a PS2 harddrive, but I was wrong, it also says the harddrive is not connected. Does anyone know if there's some special file on the official hard drive that lets it be recognized by the utility disc and FFXI? Or at least where I can find a file list? Or am I waisting my time because FFXI is impossible to play without the official Sony HDD...
A little more detail,
My Playstation is version 39001
the Harddrive currently installed is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 40 gig
Im not sure if its "impossible" to play ffxi off a non official hd, but it definatly impossible if you don't have a modchip. The official hard drive does have special files along with DNAS. I know if you have certain modchips, you can use a non official hard drive just like an official one, but im not sure if you can play ffxi.
Do you think there is any possible way if I were to take an official drive, hook it into an external USB case to my computer, and use some sort of software to copy all the data from it? Or at least be able to put the DNAS signature into another harddrive without a modchip
Even with a modchip you can't use a third party.
I believe that when you put in the playonline disc it immediately checks for the modchip in which case it tells you no hard drive installed.
Then, if you disable the modchip then you don't have the ATAD auto-patching feature that makes it recognizable as an official drive which will yield the same results when you put in the play online disc.
It sucks but you must have the official drive.
